Remembering Slavery

16-02-2007 17:24

Two hundred years ago the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was passed by British parliament. There has been much debate in the media about how to commemorate this event. I want to recommend several books that bring to light some of the horrors of that awful trade, the legacy of which still stains the society in which we live today...

CHOMSKY & HERMAN MEDIA CONFERENCE

09-02-2007 15:38

CONFERENCE OVERVIEW: The year 2008 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the publishing of the book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of Mass Communication (Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky, Pantheon, 1988). In this book, the authors (both of whom will be attending/participating in this conference) put forth a model, the Propaganda Model (PM), as a way of understanding the way our mass media system interrelates with our economy, political system, and society in general. Since putting forth their propaganda model, there have been both praise and criticism of this model, and there have also been many changes and technological advances in our entire communication and media landscape. This May 2007 conference (May 15-17, 2007, Windsor, Canada; see www.uwindsor.ca/propaganda) and Spring 2008 publication (of an edited scholarly collection inspired by the conference) will, through vigorous debate/discussion and fresh insight, make great strides in critically analyzing (revising/updating) the ongoing relevance of the Herman/Chomsky Propaganda Model as a useful conceptualization for understanding 21st century media and society.

The difference between piracy and theft

04-02-2007 15:58

CDs always only cost a few pence to produce, but until file-sharing became wide-spread they were always sold for £15 in the UK, $10 in the US. That hefty mark-up was the same for Sony BMG CDs, for EMI CDs, for Vivendi Universal CDs and for Warner Music CDs. No legal charges against this monopolistic, exploitative, price-fixing cartel were ever brought because governments protect business not citizens.

Photos - Oil Spill to save wildlife ?

03-02-2007 23:37

Shortly after midday on Saturday the 3rd Feb, environmental activists defaced a Shell Oil sponsored photo exhibition and called on the Natural History Museum to drop it's greenwashing deal with the oil giant.

While a banner was dropped in the main hall and 600 leaflets handed out to members of the public, an oil like substance was sprayed over the wildlife photos in the Shell sponsored exhibition. There were a large number of security personnel present and some of the protesters were assaulted by panicking museum staff and members of the public but there were no arrests.

The action follows the publication of Shell's 2006 record breaking financial figures and the release of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change fourth report which yet again suggests that climate change is happening faster then previously predicted.
