This day...a day in infamy.

23-07-2011 16:45

The malevolent media at work.
Why Norway? The answer is simple. Because it gives quarter to those who leapt into an inner coma of satisfaction and delight upon seeing the destruction of 9/11 writ large across the world. It gives quarter to those who cannot see the terrible injustice of war without end and war without conscience. It gives harbour to those who's hatred of Islam is matched only by the indifference of those around them who will not succumb to such malevolance. It will not go to war, against those who live to give to war. For the people of Norway, the scale and horror of this tragedy, is directly proportional to the scale of the failure of the villainous and morally dishevelled Anders Behring Breivik to fit into an environment hostile to his very existence.

JUST DO IT Coming to Cambridge Arts Picturehouse Monday 18

14-07-2011 15:01

Just Do It lifts the lid on climate activism and the daring troublemakers who have crossed the line to become modern day outlaws. Emily James spent over a year embedded in activist groups such as Climate Camp and Plane Stupid to document their clandestine activities. With unprecedented access, Just Do It introduces you to a powerful cast of mischievous and inspiring characters who put their bodies in the way; they blockade factories, attack coal power stations and glue themselves to the trading floors of international banks despite the very real threat of arrest. Come see it at the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse Monday 18th July at 6:30!

‘Guerilla Ballet’ disrupts BP-sponsored opera event in Trafalgar Square

13-07-2011 23:21

Three ballet dancers interrupted BP’s third and final Summer Screen in Trafalgar Square[1], 30 minutes before the scheduled broadcast of the opera Cinderella began. The disturbance took the form of a short piece of dance based on Swan Lake [2], with the classic tale used as analogy for BP’s controversial investment in the Canadian tar sands [3],[4]. The performance featured the White Swan being smeared by an oily substance and suffocated with a cloth. The crowd of opera-lovers were very receptive, greeting the grand finale with applause and cheers.

Charlie Byers, who played the prince, explained: “The tar sands are one of the biggest threats to the future of our climate [5]; they are also destroying local communities and wildlife, trampling indigenous rights, and running Canada out of water and natural gas. It is a key time to pressure BP to withdraw, as the corporation has already substantially invested in the tar sands but will not start profiting for years to come.”

'Just Do It' - Review

13-07-2011 11:27

Review of the film 'just do it', which will be coming to cinemas next week. The film documents the environmental protest movement over the last three years. Its revealing and exciting, with lots of live footage of direct action and action planning not available in any mainstream media. It does, however, focus more on actions than the politics and organisation behind these actions, which are ignored or simplified. definitely watch it.

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 2

12-07-2011 19:56

F.I.T. Watched. Unlike them though, I publish what I shoot.
The police were careful to keep both demos very separate, and went to great lengths (and doubtless great expense, including keeping the copper chopper in the sky all afternoon), to ensure that each demo happened at opposite ends of town.

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 1

12-07-2011 19:31

Even a clown turned up!
Last Saturday (July 9th, 2011), the people of Cambridge voted en masse with their feet and took to the streets in response to their city being paid a visit by the English Defence League (EDL).

The EDL, who despite most of them having commuted into the town for their own demo on the same day, claimed to speak on behalf of the people of Cambridge by raising objections to plans to build a Mosque and Community Centre at the far end of Mill Road, to replace the smaller overcrowded one on Mawson Road.

Lots (and lots) of stuff happening, as we wind up to the next really BIG Council meeting on the 21st. Reclaim the Cowley Rd Carnvial on Sunday

01-07-2011 08:20

Are we happy with the officially sanctioned corporately sponsored festival in the park and paying to see commercial musicians? Don't we miss the localness and simple vibe of the Cowley Rd Carnival? If David Cameron wants us to have street parties, why don't we just have them?

Our carnival's been stolen ... let's steal it back!

UG#554 - Homo Miserabilis (From Primitive Affluence to Developed Poverty)

25-06-2011 08:57

Audio
The show this week looks at 'human needs' - a concept so deep as to go largely unquestioned by ideologues of economics and economic 'development'. We start with a reading from an anthropology professor which challenges ideas of 'primitive' people's poverty, before some of an essay by Illich on "Needs". In our second hour, some easier listening - a radio adaptation of a film on consumerism, Shop Til You Drop.
