Council deceive community and approve Glentaggart East opencast

16-12-2011 16:28

Colin McDowall recomended approval to councillors - but who does he work for?
It’s been glaringly obvious for some time that South Lanarkshire Council will do anything to help Scottish Coal mine the Douglas Valley – but the way that they sneaked this latest application through defies belief. Every means possible was used to ensure that no one except the Council knew that the decision on the 4 million tonne Glentaggart East application was going in front of the planning committee. Following a recommendation for approval signed off by Colin McDowell on 5th December, South Lanarkshire Council Planning Committee voted on Tuesday to accept the application.

#COP17 : Capitalism is the Cause of Climate Change

04-12-2011 15:48

Yesterday I attended a march for the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice. The atmosphere was lively as thousands of protesters (estimated at 6,500) demonstrated against the failure of parties to negotiate fair and ambitious solutions to the current climate crisis. As the global working class filled the streets of Durban today, one message became very clear. Capitalism is causing climate change.

The event was organized by a coalition of the Democratic Left Front, the Rural Women’s Alliance, Climate Justice Now!, Climate Action Network, and attended by many other organizations in solidarity such as Canada’s own Canadian Youth Climate Coalition, the Polaris Institute, and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. The rally began at 9:00am and started marching around 10:30am. The march went on for about five hours taking the streets from central Durban, past the International Convention Centre, and to the North Beach.

Gardai rendered powerless as campaigners blockade Shell’s compound

03-12-2011 23:19

Gates to compound blocked by campaigners
Work was completely halted at Shell’s compound yesterday for over five hours in a great show of resiliance by local campaigners and their supporters. For the past two weeks now, Shell have been attempting to remove masses of peat from the compound in preparation for the tunnel boring machine which is expected to arrive early next year. Progress has been continuously disrupted as protesters brave the winter weather to stop trucks and a determined resistance is building momentum.

Ministry blocks anti-tar sands law, so we block ministry's front door

28-11-2011 14:40

http://t.co/Kz9svKmJ lbarringtonbush
This morning, 50 activists blockaded the Department for Transport with two immobilised cars parked in front of the entrance. Why? Because our government is trying to scupper EU legislation that will block tar sands oil - the dirtiest, most polluting form of oil there is - from being sold at UK petrol pumps.

Mining for tar sands is wrecking the Canadian boreal forest, destroying the homelands of indigenous people, and accelerating dangerous climate change.

So why then is the Department for Transport trying to sabotage legislation that would block tar sands oil from European petrol pumps? Looks like they’ve been lobbied hard by the Canadian government and big oil. Now it’s your turn to lobby.

Please write to Nick Clegg*: he needs to tell the ministry to stop standing in the way of green legislation. It's time Clegg acted on the green credentials he keeps talking about.
