Sanctuary for Jonathan Kazembe

12-06-2008 09:32

Jonathan Kazembe
Jonathan is a trainee teacher from Kirumba-Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has suffered harassment and discrimination as a member of the Banyamulenge tribe. Things got worse when Jonathan joined a humanitarian organisation in 2002 and fought, with others, to stop the conscription of child soldiers by both rebel and government forces. Soldiers would march into the school and seize boys as young as eight years, giving them guns and sending them to fight and kill.

Amdani Juma: Write to Ministers

06-06-2008 17:45

Amdani Juma's deportation has been postponed until Tuesday 10th June, but remains a real threat. There has already been a massive campaign in support of Amdani and a huge amount of pressure. We hope to continue that by writing to a number of Ministers who may be able to apply some pressure in his favour.

Below are template letter to Alan Johnson (Secretary of State for Health), Hazel Blears (Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government), Jacqui Smith (Home Secretary) and Gordon Brown (Prime Minister). Please send as many as you can. Feel free to adapt these templates, but please avoid being hostile.

When you've sent your communication off, please also send a copy to  ncbinotts@ncbi.org.uk so that Amdani's solicitor can make the authorities aware of the extent of Amdani's support.

Around the Campaigns Friday 6th June 2008

06-06-2008 13:45

"As it stands Amdani is now due to be deported on Tuesday evening 10th June. Liam Byrne called Amdani's MP Alan Simpson in for a meeting. Simpson reported that Byrne is going to look into the case again. In the meantime there was one of the biggest demonstrations Nottingham has seen in recent years in the town centre on Saturday 31st May. Around 300 people gathered to make known our message that Amdani must stay. Even though the Simpson/Byrne meeting gives a ray of hope we are still calling on people to contact the Home Office etc. For frequent updates, model letters etc.
