Increased security in detention centres

A new phone system run by a private company will replace personal mobile phones in immigration detention centres, according to Corporate Watch, a group which investigates corporate activities.

As a result, detainees will not be able to call free numbers and will have to pay higher rates in order to call their families and lawyers. Furthermore, the new system, which will be connected to a central operating system, will allow immigration authorities and the centre’s prison management to record and monitor all conversations, as well as ending calls.

Every month a small group of campaigners gathers outside "Campsfield House", near Oxford. Inside, behind layers of tall, razor-wire fences, are 200 people imprisoned indefinitely for the "crime" of being poor, non-white, and foreign.

Iranian refugees suspend Hunger Strike after 37 days -- "the fight goes on"

The six Iranian activists protesting against the Home Office in Croydon and central London will stop their hunger strike tomorrow (Wednesday 11 May). They are calling for supporters to join them outside the Amnesty International head office (1 Easton St, London WC1) at 12 noon tomorrow, where they will cut the stitches sealing their mouths.

Australia to dump boat people in horrific Malaysian camps

Refugee support groups are horrified by a deal the Australian government has made to dump 800 boat people in Malaysia, where they face detention in camps under horrific conditions. Under the deal 800 asylum seekers who make their way to Australia by boat could be immediately taken to Malaysia to have their claims processed. In return Australia will take 4,000 people already living in Malaysia as genuine refugees.

Campaigners leafleted customers outside a Barnardo's charity shop in Marylebone, during the busy lunch hour in London's West End, to protest against their involvement with the UK Border Agency. Barnardo's has accepted a government contract to run a creche at the soon-to-be-opened "Pre-departure accommodation facility" near Gatwick.

Brussels detention centre blockaded in attempt to stop Congo deportation

This morning around 20 activists blocked the entrance to the 127 bis detention centre in Steenokkerzeel, near the main airport of Brussels. They were attempting to stop the deportation of 60 Congolese refugees on a charter flight KInshasa organised by the joint European border agency Frontex and "secured" by Belgian federal police.

Olga Novoselova released from Yarl’s Wood!

We are delighted to announce that at approximately 5 pm on 12 April 2011, domestic violence survivor Olga Novoselova was released from a period of three months’ detention at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre.

Olga has now been reuinted with her family in Bootle, Merseyside where she is continuing her fight against the threat of deportation. A big thankyou to all those who supported Olga during her detention!

David Cameron's latest speech on non-EU immigration was best summarised in a satirical Tweet by comedian James Cook: "You know who I blame for the country's problems? The people in our society with the least amount of power or wealth." It is a transparent bid to distract from the unpopularity of the government's policies and canvas for right wing support in the coming local elections. But even more importantly than that, it is a resurrection of the age old 'divide and conquer' politics, aimed at undermining the working class as a whole.
