Demo at (Mis)Communications House in solidarity with Yarl's Wood hunger strikers

27-06-2009 22:20

Communications House and the demo outside

About 50 people gathered today outside Communications House, one of London's two immigration reporting centres and so-called 'short-term holding facilities', to protest against immigration detention and deportation and show solidarity with the Yarl's Wood hunger strikers. Many leaflets were given out and chants of 'No borders, no nations, stop deportations' filled the air of Old Street. One of the hunger strikers addressed the crowd on the phone and speakers, including an ex-Yarl's Wood detainee, delivered moving speeches about the inhumane conditions inside detention centres and migrants' struggles against the government's racist immigration policies.

Refugees in Calais. Why we say NO BORDERS!

26-06-2009 23:44

Hundreds queue on a Calais industrial estate.
A few years ago that nice Mr Sarkozy (then French home secretary) was desperate to impress that even nicer Mr Blair. So to capitulate to Mr Blair and his masters in the British tabloid media, he closed the Red Cross Sangatte refugee camp near Calais. Prior to its demolition Sangatte was a place where vulnerable refugees fleeing places like Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan could get food, healthcare and a bed for the night. By a staggering coincidence Great Britain has had rather a lot of influence in the fortunes of Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan. So some people might suggest that we have a slight responsibility with regard to helping these people? Now (post Sangatte) they have to sleep under bridges and in dangerous camps where they are regularly attacked by the Police and local racists. Fortunately they are being fed each day by a number of unpaid volunteers from the Calais based 'Salam' charity who are doing an amazing job.

Border problems - no chance for the Afghani people in Calais

25-06-2009 19:10

Police arrest Afghani people in Calais
My name is Ali. I'm from Afghanistan. Now we live in the "Jungle", how we call the woods around Calais, were we're forced to live. We request support from the English people. The border is very hard. No one pass to England. The English government should tell the government of France to open the border.

Update And Info From Calais No Border Camp

24-06-2009 16:55

A farcical curtain of steel has descended on Calais, and the massive campaign of demonisation of our camp by the local authorities continues in the press. The camp is now fully set up with approx 300 people from all over Europe. Many local people are visiting the site and a group of around 40 mostly Kurdish and Afghani migrants. It is nice big site, quite open for people to come walk around and a lot of local kids hanging out. It runs alongside the main motorway from the port out of town and is just a few minutes from the Jungle, the makeshift camps where migrants are living. Many of the migrants seem to be very young, one just 12 year old Afghani visited the camp last night. Migrants report that currently the controls at the border are very tight and that no one has been getting through for few weeks, consequently the number of migrants in Calais are at their highest in several years.

Around the Campaigns ~ Monday 22nd June 2009

22-06-2009 07:39

Sulaiti & Gabriel have left the UK
"Sorry to say they were removed yesterday to Ethiopia (despite being from Uganda).... her friend talked to her in Addis Ababa and she was okay... still waiting to hear from them once they are in Uganda. We went to Glasgow airport Wednesday to leaflet other passengers as a last effort to no avail. .

Anyway, sad news, but two people in to the Centre today have gotten Indefinite Leave to Remain for themselves and their children -- so some good with the bad."
