Devonport submarine base blockaded by Trident Ploughshares, one arrest

Blockade at Camel's Head (S. Lasenby) Around thirteen activists from anti-nuclear direct action group Trident Ploughshares took the police by surprise when they blockaded Devonport naval dockyard, near the centre of Plymouth, in the early hours of Friday, 22 August, 2008. One man was arrested. The Royal Navy base is used to refit nuclear submarines, including the Trident nuclear missile-carrying Vanguard fleet based at Faslane, Scotland.

Zapatista solidarity protests at Edinburgh, Bournemouth and European Airports

Zapatista solidarity protest at Edinburgh Airport Passengers hurrying into the main check-in at Edinburgh international airport on 22 August were greeted by an unusual sight. A massive banner proclaimed: “ MEXICO ...Sun…Fun…bloomin’ nice beaches…”, alongside a painting of a palm tree. A somewhat eccentric Mexican tourist board initiative perhaps?
Not exactly. “Torture….Death Squads…Human Rights Breaches…” continued the lower half of the banner, with a carefully painted AK47 illustrating the point.

ITT - EDO MBM Begins Full Scale Paveway IV Guided Bomb Production in Brighton

After 4 years of developmental setbacks the Raytheon IV guided bomb is now in full production in the UK.

The new weapon is intended to replace the Paveway III guided bomb, the most commonly used munition in the 2003 'shock and awe' bombing of Iraq.

EDO MBM Technology Ltd (now owned by ITT Corp) are UK design and production partners on the new 'smart bomb' with Raytheon, Portsmouth Aviation, and Thales.

Once again EDO MBM is found to be at the heart of UK and joint US/UK military operations in Iraq and Afganistan.

Novartis Horsham saw a good turnout out of activists who created quite a presence with their sea of banners. Public support of the the campaign appears to be increasing, with many cars hooting as they pass by the noisy and visual demo.
