Arora, the latest detention profiteer
Activists from No Borders London staged a protest last week inside the Arora International Hotel, near Heathrow airport, against the hotel owners' plans to turn one of their other hotels, at Gatwick airport, into an immigration prison. Driven by what appears to be a decline in business, Arora Management Services had applied to the Crawley Borough Council for permission to convert its four-star hotel, Mercure, into an immigration detention centre. As one of the protesters put it, "this is just another example of the cynical, profit-driven opportunism exhibited by big companies wanting a slice of the lucrative detention market."[Full Story ]

Gordon Brown vists Camden estate as "Police do nothing where women attacked".
Gordon Brown made an unannounced visit to a Camden council estate in Gospel Oak. A gran told Gordon how she defended herself and her granddaughter with a baseball bat when 60 male youths chased her, tried to set her on fire, sabotaged her garden and threatened her granddaughter. Six members of Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group are now in the West Bank. They have been visiting communities in the Jordan Valley and Bil'in, and have a lot of plans for the next few weeks. Read their blog at www.brightonpalestine.org to keep up to date with what is happening.The Brighton Tubas Region Friendship and Solidarity Group is a network aiming at fostering links between community organisations in Tubas, occupied Palestine and Brighton. The Tubas Region, which includes the Northern Jordan Valley, is an area Israel wants to ethnically cleanse and annex. Israel is doing this by making life impossible for the people of the valley.

UK government condemns British mining company Vedanta
In an unprecedented attack on a major British company, the government ruled that Vedanta, ‘did not respect the rights of the Dongria Kondh’; ‘did not consider the impact of the construction of the mine on the [tribe’s] rights’; and ‘failed to put in place an adequate and timely consultation mechanism’.
