I Survived the Georgian War. Here's What I Saw.

- In a speech before the United Nations last month, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili implored world leaders to set up an international investigation to find out the truth about the war in South Ossetia.

I couldn't agree more. But I think the results of an honest investigation would reveal a very different "truth" than what President Saakashvili claims.

I know this because I was in Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, on Aug. 7 when Georgian troops marched into the city and killed my friends and neighbors. I huddled with my family in terror for three nights while Saakashvili's tanks and rockets destroyed hundreds of our homes, desecrated cemeteries, gutted schools and hospitals.

In London: Assemble 1pm at New Scotland Yard, with pots, pans and other stuff to make some noise!!

A broad movement of campaigners and organizations is calling on everybody to join action against excessive surveillance by governments and businesses. On 11 October 2008, concerned people in many countries will take to the streets, the motto being "Freedom not fear 2008". Creative action, from protest marches to parties, will take place in many capital cities.

42-day detention dropped as unworkable

Gordon Brown is preparing for a humiliating climbdown over his proposal to hold terrorist suspects for 42 days after being told that it will be defeated in the House of Lords. Ministers admit privately that there is not "a cat in Hell's chance" of the legislation, which returns to the Lords this week, being passed into law.

As you may know, Hicham Yezza was originally arrested at the University of Nottingham in May along with Rizwaan Sabir in a bogus 'terror operation'. The pair were then released without charge (or apology); Hich was swiftly re-arrested on 'immigration grouds' and held in detention for a further three weeks. Students, academics and politicians have made it clear that the maltreatment of Hicham was and continues to be an attempt to cover up "a dreadful cock-up".
