Jude Christie
Jude arrived at Gatwick on June 15th 2007 and asked for political asylum as he feared for his life if he went back to his native country, Sri Lanka. He has been in various detention centres for the last 2 months. He has been physically put on planes on three occasions (15th, 24th, and 30th July 2007) to be forcefully removed. Fortunately, on all three occasions his lawyer managed to get the removals stopped.

Sri Lanka - 547 persons killed - 396 disappearances - first 6 months of 2007

The Law & Society Trust, in collaboration with local partners including the Civil Monitoring Commission and the Free Media Movement, has compiled a working document listing 547 persons killed and 396 persons disappeared during the period January to June 2007. The complete confidential document, with names, locations of incidents and all available data, has been submitted to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry ("the Commission") as well as relevant members of Government.

Scared by a wave of unofficial walkouts at the beginning of August that raised the spectre of an all out post strike, Royal Mail bosses have finally agreed to negotiations with the Communication Workers Union. Reportedly £23 million has been found to help fund pay rises. But the rank and file militants, who led the decisive wildcat strike in Scotland that forced Royal Mail into talks, may still be denied victory. A CWU rep explains the dangers - and the opportunities - in the current stage of the dispute.

SWP covers for sell-out of postal workers strike

On August 9, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) announced that it was suspending further strike action in Britain’s postal service. Without any explanation to its members, the CWU declared it was entering negotiations with Royal Mail in an attempt to reach an agreement by September 4. A national demonstration planned for August 21 was cancelled.

Cargo-Striker and Climate-Camper Solidarity

Cargo workers at Nippon Express Heathrow depot are out on strike against changes that would see them working 25% longer hours for no extra pay. Climate campers have been keen to show their support and have visited the picket line throughout the current 48-hour stoppage, which ends at 6am Sunday. This morning about 30 campers brought a banner (and about 20 police!) and chatted to strikers for a couple of hours.

UK Bangladeshis robbed via '1st. Solution', let down by diplomatic mission in UK

The UK Bangladeshis who have been robbed of their money by a group of perpetrators operating under the front 'First Solution' that had been based near the East London Mosque in Whitechapel Road London E1, had been promised help by the current, care-taker regime in Bangladesh. To date, the victims have not received any help if it is defined by their having received the money back. Why? Is the current care-taker administration in Dhaka, the capital city in Bangladesh, being fully informed by their UK diplomatic mission based in London? Or are there other players and factors involved?
