15-07-2007 16:47

Sacked workers, their families and fellow trade unionists held a demonstration on Thursday, 12 July, outside the Boots store in High Street, Birmingham city centre, to protest over reduced pensions following the closure of the Lil-Lets tampon-making plant in Alum Rock last June. The protest was the second in a series of protests outside Lil-Lets major customers, organised by the UK's largest union, Unite. The first one took place outside Tesco and Boots at the Beggars Bush on the Princess Alice Retail Park, Birmingham, on 7 July. Seven other protests across the Midlands are planned in July and August, while women across the Midlands are being urged to boycott Lil-Lets products.

Second Round of Postal Workers Strike: Birmingham Picket Lines

12-07-2007 22:50

the back gate picket line 1
Following failed talks with the Royal Mail management last night, postal workers across the country went on a second 24-hour strike in two weeks, starting at 7pm today. Picket lines were again mounted at sorting offices in the evening and many more are planned tomorrow morning at delivery offices and depots.

In Birmingham, three picket lines were formed at each gate of the main mail centre in Newtown. Solidarity from fellow workers, as well as from members of the West Midlands Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) union, was impressive.

Immigration Reform Is Needed, After Bush

03-07-2007 00:40

Stewart Alexander, a presidential hopeful with the Peace and Freedom Party, says, “I believe Congress should work on comprehensive immigration reform after President Bush ends his term in office. I do not believe this important issue should be used as a political football or as a bandage for an administration that is hemorrhaging before the nation and the world.”

UK expatriate Bangladeshis hard earned cash robbed by Bangladeshi outfit

02-07-2007 10:56

A number of spontaneous demonstrations have been held in the UK, including in Luton and mainly in London. Postal Strike in London a massive success.

30-06-2007 23:17

Mount Pleasant Sorting Office.
From the CWU website:

Over 95% of postal workers were taken part in strike action across the UK.

CWU General Secretary Billy Hayes said

“The strength of support today has proven that postal workers are resolutely determined to fight against cuts in the public service, against job cuts and for decent basic pay”.

The Union has again today reiterated their call on Royal Mail to negotiate seriously with the union on pay and dealing with major change and modernisation.

“We have seven days with no strikes and this is a window of opportunity for the company to come and negotiate seriously. We urge them to take it”, said Dave Ward, Deputy General Secretary

The Unions Executive is meeting Tuesday to consider the next steps. If Royal Mail continue to refuse to negotiate, this is likely to see the announcement of further strike action.
