Attack on civil service redundancy pay anticipates massive job losses throughout public sector

The Conservative-Liberal Democrat government is to implement legislation slashing the redundancy pay of civil servants by as much as 85 percent. The aim is to pave the way for the 600,000 public sector job losses required by its savage cuts package to government departments of between 25 and 40 percent in the next four years.

The Trail of Tears for Afghanistan peace walk from London to Colchester took place from Sunday, 27th June to Thursday, 1st July 2010. It was meant as an act of solidarity with British war resister Joe Glenton and others like him, and as a remembrance of the countless victims on all sides of the bloody (almost) nine-year war in Afghanistan, now spreading to Pakistan.

Manchester College staff strike back

Members of the University and College Union at The Manchester College (TMC) were on strike today in the latest stage of the row over new contracts. Pickets lines were held at TMC buildings around the city from 7.30am, before moving to a rally at the Mechanics Institute at midday.

THERE IS A REASON to celebrate the inauguration of President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino -- we have finally dumped the most corrupt and most hated regime since the fall of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986. GMA didn't deserve the President's farewell granted her. She should have been ousted years ago. Nevertheless, Aquino’s victory rightfully belongs to the Filipino people who voted against Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her minions.

4 events in Nottingham - anti-fascism in 1930s Spain and rededication of Interna

July 2010 sees a series of events in Nottingham commemorating the anti-fascists’ fight against General Franco’s coup in the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s. The 4 events will take place starting 17th July 2010 and include memorial re-dedication, exhibitions, talks and a cinema event.

Great News! Saman's deportation cancelled Monday morning. NCADC received a call from Saman's partner saying that he had been pulled from the flight. She would like to thank all those who have supported the campaign. However, they are still deeply concerned as they do not have legal representation. If anyone could support Saman in this way please email  ncadc@ncadc.org.uk. Saman Akbarirad is being held at Harmondsworth. Saman fled Iran after being imprisoned and tortured for political activities.

Spending cuts in Britain worst since World War II

After detailed examination of the UK coalition budget measures, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said the country faces the “longest, deepest, sustained period of cuts to public services spending at least since World War II”. It is the first time that a British government has proposed six consecutive years of spending cuts.

Irish unions agree to four-year strike ban

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU)’s public service committee voted last week to formally agree a four-year strike ban, wholesale rationalisations in public services, unknown thousands of “voluntary” job losses and a continued pay freeze. The so-called Croke Park agreement is the worst so far agreed by any union federation in Europe in response to the economic crisis.
