The student protests in London and Manchester on the 29th January were a probably unsuprising return to normal. The excitement and spontaneity and the invention of new demo tactics from last year's demos now seemed a long time ago. There follows some suggestions on why this could be to be debated, scorned, corrected, reviled, laughed at, cried over, improved, perfected and finally put into practice.

Police plan huge operation to contain Manchester student protest on Saturday

A massive police operation costing around £100,000 is being planned ahead of a protest by up to 14,000 students.

Greater Manchester Police have shared intelligence with other forces to identify potential troublemakers before the march in Manchester city centre on Saturday. Police fear extremists could hijack the protest over government education cuts.

Canada Hiding Tunisia's Ben Ali Family 'Big Fish' Billionaire?

Indications are that family members of the Tunisian dictator, including billionaire, Belhassen Trabelsi are in hiding in Canada. Authorities there seem unwilling to arrest the fugitives despite Interpol warrants. Tunisians in Canada are alarmed and concerned. Protests are planned in the Canadian capital next Wednesday.

Following the example of their Tunisian counterparts, large sections of the Egyptian working class are demanding the end of Hosni Mubarak's US-backed dictatorship. After yesterday's national day of action, which saw thousands taking on police in the streets of Cairo, the dictator's son has reportedly fled for Britain.

Coach Oxford to London - 29 Jan - Anti-cuts, Save EMA

There's a national protest against fees and funding / EMA cuts in London this Saturday - it was mentioned at the OEC meeting that Oxford Right To Work have organised a coach but will have to cancel it unless more people use it. People seemed very up for getting some good action done. Should be good in its own right, and it should give us food for thought re. tactics for March.
It's £5 waged, £10 unwaged, leaves St. Giles at 9.30 and leaves London (Malet St. area) at 4.30.

The recent student unrest has massively expanded political possibilities in the UK and Europe. The game is afoot and the next move is to generalise the struggle beyond the education sector. For many an ‘anti-cuts’ message is the way to do this. There is a danger, however, that the logic of this position contains the mechanism of its own failure. We urgently need to foment a shift away from a politics that defends our own powerlessness, to one where we can become the collective authors of our own histories.
