Defend Asylum Seekers
On 18 August 2006, the North West Asylum Seekers Defence Group, Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism!, asylum seekers as well as other anti-racist campaigners gathered outside Dallas Court Reporting Centre in Salford Quays, to protest against the racist treatment of asylum seekers and the continued kidnapping of people at Dallas Court. Including the recent kidnap and transfer to Campsfield, on Wednesday, 16 August of Jean Lobouka from Congo (Brazzaville), when he went to sign.

The Cachan Thousand Being Evicted

IWW Bradford in northern England leafletted two Starbucks stores on 12 August in support of union organizer Daniel Gross, who was the latest IWW fired in New York the Saturday before. The Starbucks Union has called for a boycott of Starbucks until all four organizers fired are re-hired.

We are calling for all people who can to arrive in Leeds from Monday August 21 and head to the Common Place, 23-25 Wharf Street, Leeds LS2 7EQ. This is to build all the infrastructure ready to occupy the site. This is a mammoth task and the more people we have the more infrastructure is ready when we occupy the site and the less has to be built there. No DIY knowledge is needed as the highly skilled site practicalities group will be there to make sure everything goes smoothly!

Mon 14th Aug: Today Beirut began to return to life. Shops are opening and the roads are jammed with traffic. For the first time since I have been here people are obeying the traffic lights. Hundreds of refugees are flooding back into the devastated south Beirut district of Dhayiya, with a dignity that is breathtaking.

At around 2.30 the Israelis start pounding the southern suburbs of Beirut again. One of those bunker buster bombs shakes the windows of our accommodation. We are miles away. We get a lift into the south of the city. Hizbollah stop our car as we approach the area around an hour after the strike. They have put a large cordon around the areas that are being hit or expected to be. They give us directions to a vantage point high above the city where we can view the proceedings from a safe distance.

Joining him on the platform will be renowned human rights lawyer Louise Christian, Natacha Atlas, Ken Fero of Injustice Films, Shahrar Ali of the Green Party and John Pandit of Asian Dub Foundation.
