The gap between the urgent threat of global warming and the collective will to do something about it has never been greater. The recently concluded Conference on Climate Change in Bali was a grand opportunity to act. Instead, it was another missed opportunity. Unfortunately, the United States played a very negative role, standing in the way of consensus at every turn. And unfortunately, the rest of the world thought that seducing the US into a new agreement on climate action was top priority, resulting in a Bali Roadmap that was very sketchy.

On Monday this week, Merseyside Police
arrested and assaulted an animal rights activist outside Cricket on Mathew Street, a shop that sells fur products. This followed an incident where a Bolton activist was found guilty on a 'section five' for photographing cops on a demo. So yesterday afternoon, around twenty of us showed solidarity and supported the regular Saturday picket of the Cricket store, and scored a bizarre victory over an aggressive and incompetant police presence.

Last night the rains finally arrived in Beit Jala, a small town in the West Bank, one kilometer west of Bethlehem and about eight kilometers south of Jerusalem. Its alluring hills are covered with olive trees, vineyards and apricots. In 1967 Israel confiscated 22 percent of Beit Jala's land. Now, the construction of Israel's separation wall is in full swing and will cut off another 45 per cent of Beit Jala's land.
