DSEi 2011 - Life Neutral Solutions

16-09-2011 13:55

You’ve heard of the importance of being carbon neutral? Well, being Life Neutral is the same - but with people. For every* life lost as a result of the use of products from our member organisations, we make sure that a new life flourishes.

Join today and your next child could be a Life Neutral™ child. Read more...

Every two years DSEi the worlds largest arms fair rolls into town, and every time the media seem to cover it less and less. It's as if the fact that the nastiest people on the planet gathering together under one roof to sell weapons and torture equipment to corrupt regimes is not news worthy. Bahrain was recently exposed as using UK supplied weapons against pro-democracy campaigners, how did our government react to this news? They invited them to DSEi again to buy some more...

Well if that wasn't disgusting enough to tempt the press, what would be?
and so, Life Neutral Solutions was born... www.lifeneutralsolutions.com

....................................................................................................................................

Why did we do this?

Every two years the DSEi "defence and security exhibition" (the world's largest arms fair) arrives in the East End of London. With thousands of weapons companies plying their wares to delegates from dozens of reprehensible regimes, some of the nastiest people on the planet are gathered under one roof. Previously companies have been found to be advertising illegal weapons such as cluster bombs, or even torture equipment at the fair, yet our government still host and sponsor the event.

We as a group find this disgusting. As a nation we preach about peace keeping and tolerance, yet regularly sell weapons to countries with abysmal human rights records. Even after it hit the news that UK sold weapons were being used against pro-democracy demonstrators in the Arab Spring uprisings, we still invited the dictators to come and buy more at this year's fair.

Our group started attempting to shame the arms dealers back in 2003, by selling them prosthetic limbs (arms) on the DLR as they travelled to the fair. Alas we realised their moral compass is well and truly broken, and they are beyond shame. Next we tried selling them sex toys, we figured that perhaps all the phallic shaped weapons were trying to compensate for a lack of firepower elsewhere, this tactic didn't stop the fair either.

A few years ago we realised that despite huge public outcry against the fair, the media were not covering it. The ExCeL Centre itself was advertising that it was "closed for refurbishment" on their website whilst hosting THE WORLD'S LARGEST ARMS FAIR. Yet the press were barely picking up on the story. We bought a tank and called a press conference, surely an armed anarchist group attempting to drive into the fair would be news worthy? We did make the papers, but all the stories had headlines like "anti-war protesters fool police" as opposed to "the nastiest bastards in the world are in East London selling weapons to corrupt regimes".

This year, due to once again an utter lack of interest from the media in a weapons fair in the area of London that was most destroyed during the war by weapons, we decided to try and outrage people.

And so Life Neutral Solutions was born, the company based on the carbon neutral model, but offering to replace dead bodies with new babies. Turning a profit and making nice shiny new western babies to make up for collateral damage in our overseas adventures. Surely this is a joke, people cried out, it can't be real. The real joke we thought was that it took something this disgusting, this far into a moral vacuum before ears were pricked up.

Some people say the arms industry is essential for the economy, but we're sure people once said that about the slave trade and many other things that we've thankfully stopped doing in the name of progress. Perhaps one day we'll look back on these times, where our government flies Ministers around the world to sanction weapons deals, as another dark age that we've moved on from.

Bailiff’s dirty tricks at Dale Farm

13-09-2011 17:55

Last night (11/12th Sept) a man who claimed to be working for Altek Security with bailiffs Constant & Co on the operation to clear the site at Dale Farm, contacted Richard Sheridan President of the Gypsy Council, ostensibly to leak information about the eviction. He claimed the eviction would proceed at 8am on Monday morning and that Basildon Council had lied about the date the eviction would start.

Last night a man who claimed to be working for Altek Security with bailiffs Constant & Co on the operation to clear the site at Dale Farm, contacted Richard Sheridan President of the Gypsy Council, ostensibly to leak information about the eviction. He claimed the eviction would proceed at 8am on Monday morning and that Basildon Council had lied about the date the eviction would start. The man was recognised from Traveller evictions at Hovefields last year, confirming that he had previously worked with Constant & Co. He encouraged Travellers to use violence and protesters to climb barricades and to act as if they might throw themselves from these structures. He suggested urgently calling national media outlets. Dale Farm residents recorded the meeting.

Residents, already on high alert and deeply stressed, ran in panic to raise the alarm. Terrified children were unable to sleep wanting to know whether or not they would be forcibly removed from their homes and school. Many women were crying.

Supporters and residents rallied together, locked down the hatches, and tried to stay calm while they unpacked the man’s story. By 8:30am no bailiffs had turned up, but nevertheless residents suffered a night of harassment and fear.

It appears the operation to remove residents from Dale Farm has reached a new level of duplicity. Elderly and sick residents as well as children again suffered greatly.

Already there are reports of equipment arriving to build a press compound adjacent to Dale Farm. Concerns that press access to the site will be controlled by police have intensified. Residents fear lack of media access will increase the likelihood that past incidences of bailiff and police brutality will be repeated without public witness.

No Borders - from Calais to Bulgaria

13-09-2011 00:37

No Borders activists protested non-violently against EU border restrictions and the poor treatment of migrants at a recent camp near the Bulgarian borders with Turkey and Greece.

Demonstrators from around the globe marched on both borders, through the town of Svilengrad and at Liubimetz detention centre during the 5-day camp from 25-29 August 2011.

Many workshops were held as well as some very animated plenums where all learnt about communication skills and the art of compromise at a sun-drenched field in Siva Reka who all begged us to stay a little longer.

Kris, one of the many Germans at the camp, said it had been a good experience: "We learnt a lot about the No Border scene in Bulgaria, the terrible treatment of the migrants by Frontex, and the incredible spirit of the migrants who gave all they had to thank our solidarity."

If the march around the centre protected by dozens of riot police with a four-metre tall water cannon was the most emotive moment, the frontier die-ins turned out to be the most confrontational. Bulgarian police units in full body armour found the civil disobedience hard to deal with and struggled to contain the non'violent crowd at times. The die-ins across the border crossing were meant to force frontier-users to think how much we take for granted the concept of freedom of movement contrasting with how many migrants die in the river separating Turkey with Bulgaria every week. Afterwards, activists carried out autonomous actions trying to cross the frontier themselves but were illegally blocked by the customs officers from crossing into the 1km no-man's land with Greece.

Greece is in the process of building a barrier with Turkey which some rightwing politicians want to be extended along the perimeter of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria's imminent entry into the Frontex regime means that migrants and refugees will face an even greater struggle to enter the EU. Many of them emanate from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, where wars have been originated, waged or backed by Western imperial interests.

The No Borders group set about destroying the myth about migrants being the source of their problems and trying to attract more empathy from local residents about their cause.

"In Europe we have all migrated from one place to another throughout history," said one German with a migrant background. "But now they are punishing us all for a situation caused by their own errors of judgement. The West's imperialist ransacking of resources from our native lands in return for poisoned IMF loans means that the only ones who suffer are the most poor and those who stand against this repression."

Migrant populations across Europe were welcomed in the boom of the 1960s and 70s as cheap labour. Now the property bubble has finally burst they are being imprisoned in detention centres and deported across the EU.

There are many activities organised by No Borders in the UK but one of the most fulfilling has to be the No Borders project in Calais, France. Here the migrants are abused and mishandled by the French CRS and PAF police who make their life a nightmare with regular beatings and arrests.

The No Borders team who work there are a committed bunch of anarchistic activists who work to warn migrants of police raids and create working ties with the local population to help the visitors on their way to England. It is a rewarding and challenging experience to have face-to-face contact with the migrants who suffer so much running from persecution and war in their own countries. Their harrowing stories of swimming from sinking boats in the Mediterranean or scampering across the Sahara tell so much about the human spirit in the quest of their dreams, which we may have forgotten about two hours up the road in London. For more information on either the Bulgarian camp or the ongoing Calais project check the two links below.

Notts anti-cut protestors at Vodafone, TopShop etc

12-09-2011 18:02

Saturday 10th September 2011

12.30am Nottm Un-cut protestors gathered outside the central library in Nottingham.

From there, they progressed along a now well-trodden path to the Vodafone store in Clumber street, a very regular destination. Taking a tour around the city centre, people protested outside the NatWest Bank in the Market Square and onto another Vodafone store.

Up to this point, the protest was monitored by a single Community Protection Officer. However, on arriving at TopShop in Lister Gate, people entered the shop with banners to complain about the tax avoidance of the company. A security guard there was quite unpleasent and manhandled me. I was even interfered with while on the street outside! I have complained and police later attended.

On a lighter note, a bunch of ladies dressed as crayons passing by  came to join us:-)  Splendid!!

Onwards to Burton / Dorothy Perkins store near the Market Square. People were now met with a very large police presence for the size of the protest. Assorted threats of arrest were made.

Notts Uncut said:

"Notts Uncut will be coming together again to remind the tax avoiding banks and corporations based in Nottingham that we haven't gone away and we haven't forgotten what they're up to.

While the Con-Dem government is getting increasingly cut-happy, telling us that there is no money for homeless shelters and women's refuges, that we can't afford to give charities government grants, that students must pay £9000 a year for degree courses, that people living on the breadline must survive on less and less there is a select group of people who are not suffering from the cuts - the bankers and corporate fat cats. While ordinary people are suffering these people are still paying multi million pounds worth of bonuses and avoiding billions of pounds worth of tax. Let's get out there and make sure the government and their super wealthy tax dodging mates know that we're onto them!!"

dale farm solidarity march - report and pics

12-09-2011 00:02

on saturday 10th sept people arrived from all round the country to support locals and travellers in a solidarity march from wickford station to a rally at dale farm in crays hill, essex

----

around a hundred people assembled outside wickford station on saturday at 1pm to begin a more than 3-mile march to the travellers' homes at dale farm which is facing imminent eviction by basildon council.

as more people joined them, a total of around 200 assembled at the rally after the march to hear from an array of speakers supporting the battle to remain on the land they bought ten years ago.

the march was wholly peaceful, but attracted a large police presence and monitoring operation including helicopter, undercover, two video teams, and several vehicles with police dogs. a large range of people were represented on the march and the atmosphere was good-natured, proud, defiant and noisy, with a mixture of chants and the accompaniment of a small contingent from the rhythms of resistance samba band.

it was my first visit to dale farm, and i was struck by the obvious wealth of neighbouring homes, with large houses, set in well-appointed grounds, and featuring expensive and multiple vehicles on their forecourts. i could see that among other things, ranging from naked racism to some genuinely-held complaints and suspicions, there was also a potential class issue going on here.

along the route, the reception was mixed, with a few locals accepting leaflets, but others watching silently, a couple shouting racial abuse (which the police refused to act upon), and one in his driveway bizarrely filming overhead from a mobile crane surrounded by vicious looking dogs.

more people joined the march as it progressed: there was someone who had travelled from holland to show support, and i met a family who had arrived for the afternoon from bristol. some locals also joined the protest.

with short stops in wickford town and at the primary school where many of the dale farm children are currently pupils, the march finally arrived at the site after a couple of hours. there was a very warm welcome there as the samba band played us in through the high defensive scaffolding structure which has been erected at the main entrance to the site. by now, the numbers had swelled to around two hundred.

right at the heart of the site is 'camp constant', an area set up and manned by visiting activists and human rights monitors (and named ironically after the firm of bailiffs, 'constant and co', who will be earning millions of pounds from the eviction attempt). they had prepared a kitchen area which, after the speeches, served food and drink to the entire crowd, and there were also compost toilets, washing facilities, an info point for people wanting to stay and help, and marquees for meetings as well a secure area for belongings.

in his speech at camp constant, east of england labour MEP richard howitt, exploded some of the myths around the history of the site, referring to the right-wing press description of the 'green belt' area as if it were some sort of rural oasis. in fact, when basildon council sold the land to the travellers ten years ago it was a concreted and heavily contaminated scrap yard. despite suggestions that planning permission would be given, the council ended up only allowing about half the land to be built on. he spoke of international attempts to stop the eviction, his efforts to get the council of europe's damning research recommendations published, and the UN committee on the elimination of racial discrimination's request to the council to find an alternative peaceful solution. he pointed out that the march had been entirely peaceful and that any future confrontation would be of the council's making.

other speakers included secretary of the roma federation grattan puxon, david landau from 'no-one is illegal', and the south and eastern TUC secretary ,megan dobney. UAF representative weymann bennett spoke about how this eviction was an act of racism and that if it goes ahead it would give succour to groups like the BNP, EDL, and national front, whose fascist tactics begin with the targeting of one group and then spread to others. the current president of the gypsy council, richard sheridan, gave an economic analysis of the eviction, citing research into the cost of provision for unhoused travellers, and showing that the operation and its knock-on effects for ten years would amount to more than £220 million of taxpayers money - a racist ideology seemed the only rational explanation for such willingness to spend. kartic raj spoke of amnesty international's call to its members to campaign against the eviction. kika markham, corin redgrave's widow, spoke of their family's long support for the gypsy community, and clare, a rep from 'no borders', linked the government's building of new child detention centres with its willingness to put dale farm children out of schools and on to the streets.

two final speakers asked for active help. justin, from 'no sweat' asked people to come and support a cardboard city protest being held next thursday 15th at 5pm outside eric pickles' dept for communities and local government at eland house in victoria, london, and pete from 'dale farm solidarity' told people they were welcome to stay and help out, starting with a human rights monitor workshop to be held in one of the marquees that afternoon.

as the crowd ate food, drank tea, networked, and met the residents, the samba band gave an impromptu samba workshop to some of the resident children, and a system of lifts back to the station was arranged.

the stark truth is that at a time when the government and basildon council are cutting services on a massive scale, they are prepared to spend a vast amount of money on this racist eviction without providing solutions to where the travellers will go, how their children will be educated, and how international humanitarian requirements will be met. in response, a wide variety of non-governmental organisations as well as direct action activists will continue to do everything in their power to prevent this crazy course of action from taking place.

Back in 2009, after several years work, the Keyworth Village plan was completed by an independent group of volunteers who live in Keyworth. One of the clearest outcomes was that 89% of residents did not want another supermarket in the village.

So you can imagine the consternation when in march 2010 Tesco announced, with just five days notice, that they would be holding a public exhibition in Keyworth of their proposed supermarket. Although neither local residents, politicians, nor councils had prior knowledge of these plans the Tesco’s representatives arrived to stage their exhibition only to be greeted by a campaign stall set up by the already established opposition campaign.

Over the next 18 months many people dedicated a great deal of time and effort to campaign against Tesco’s proposal, and many lobbied the planning department of the local council. In March 2010 Tesco’s proposal was rejected by Rushcliffe Borough Council but in March 2011 Tesco appealed this decision.

The Planning Inspector heard a 4 day enquiry in June 2011 and his decision to deny Tesco’s appeal reached the people of Keyworth on 9th September.

Hopefully the property developers who own the land will now revert to their original plan, for which they have permission, to build sheltered housing.

The inspector’s decision was based on safety issues due to the narrow footpaths leading to the site of the store and the potential effects on local shops.

It may be useful to note that the Inspector found significant errors (?) in the data Tesco provided regarding its likely impact on local shops! This was exposed by an independent survey commissioned by the local traders.

Whilst the people of Keyworth have earned a celebratory party it is sad that the fate of the community was not decided by that community. In the end it was based on the decision of an outside Inspector applying rules which we have no part in drafting.

The wishes of the community were clear 2 years ago but since then Tesco’s avarice has wasted huge amounts of public funds and the personal time of council staff and Keyworth people and caused great emotional upset to many people of the community.
