If you're not angry, you're not paying attention.

15-03-2006 23:00

This weekend there will be massive demonstrations all over the world against the occupation of Iraq and the theatening noises being made against Iran. Many people doubt the effectiveness of such 'A to B' marches and lobbying, instead prefering direct confrontation with the companies that seek to profit from war and direct action aimed at putting a spanner in the works....

Olive Mukarugwiza and family's deportation from Gatwick Airport to Rwanda did not go ahead on 14 March. On the same day, their solicitor won a judicial review and Dallas Court informed the airline, who prevented the family boarding. The escorts apparently were very cross (!) and threatened the solicitor with action! The solicitor will try to get the family out asap. Thanks to all who supported Olive and her family by phoning and sending faxes.

Breaking news from Israel

14-03-2006 16:03

British and US prison wardens, who were meant to be guarding and protecting prisoners including Ahmed Saadat, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, have withdrawn to allow the Israeli army to storm the prison. The British government must be urgently contacted to press them to re-enter the prison and protect those inside. Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the raid and said the US and UK warders were responsible for the prisoners' safety. Reports are that already one prison policeman has been killed and 18 wounded. According to the BBC, ‘50 jeeps and three tanks pushed into the oasis town in the Jordan valley, as two helicopters hovered overhead. The army later brought a large armoured bulldozer to the prison, which proceeded to demolish walls.’

Biosafety Meeting in Curitiba: Towards a strict GMO labelling?

14-03-2006 12:01

On Monday, 13 March the Third Conference on the Biosafety Protocol (MOP3) started in Curitiba, Brazil. The Biosafety Protocol is the only international treaty that sets obligatory rules for the trade with GMOs. Main issue of this meeting is the question how GMOs have to be labelled (Article 18). GMO producers favour the very vague label that something "may contain" GMOs, while most countries want a clear description of which GMO is contained in a shipment. (background of COP8/MOP3 meeting ).

Dalston Theatre court case- freedom of expression? hmmm

14-03-2006 02:06

The occupants of the buildings alongside Dalston Theatre, 4-14 Dalston Lane E9, went to Shoreditch Court this Monday morning. With very little hope for a decision which would allow them to bide more time before the plans go ahead for the demolition of the theatre, the occupants decided the best approach was to make their own voices, along with the people of Hackney that have been supporting the occupation continuously, heard in the most honest and direct way possible.
Unfortunately, much time was taken up by the statement of the other defendent, and the judge did not allow time for the statement below to be read.
