unions cuts march and london anti-workfare actions - pics & report

21-10-2012 13:30

piccadilly
despite very little publicity for yesterday's union-organised march in london, there was an impressive turn-out, with huge numbers still waiting to leave the embankment at the time the front of the march entered hyde park. as DPAC closed down park lane, and activists targetted oxford street workfare and tax avoidance stores, policing was sporadically violent, very high on surveillance, but with very few arrests.

March For A Future That Works

21-10-2012 06:47

The TUC may have underestimated the size of their own march yesterday. 100,000? It took an hour and twenty-three minutes to pass Green Park, and I wasn't at the head of the march when I started timing. I reckon the whole procession was more than two miles long.

Time to move on: IMC London signing off

13-10-2012 14:55

The Indymedia London collective has taken a decision to close.

Collectively we have racked up almost 100 years of involvement with the Indymedia project; from the beginnings of Indymedia in 1999 and the launch of Indymedia UK in 2000 as a manual website and evolution to a content management site, to the creation of local indymedia groups in 2003, and then the launch of the current IMC London website in 2008.

So it is with a sad heart that we bring this latest chapter to an end. Firstly thanks to all the people, friends and comrades who have participated in the project with us over the years, as users, as members of the london collective (over 50 people) and other imc collectives, or as supporters behind the scenes. All of us wish to continue working in a similar terrain and view what comes next as a development from the work that’s already been done. However for us, this Indymedia project is for many reasons no longer the one which we think is tactically useful to put our energy into. There are still many features of the project that we believe to be important and essential, but others which are less so. Below we set out some thoughts on both of these, and some of the challenges and limitations of the Indymedia project over the years.

On a practical note, the open publishing newswire of this website is now closed and the content will be archived, along with selected london related content from the previous different Indymedia UK websites. User logons for the website will no longer work. Our public email lists and wiki pages will also be closed and kept as archives.

We will add to the London Indymedia archive some further reflections and evaluations generated through more than a decade of practice, debate and argument. We also think the function of the London events calendar has been an important one and are interested in thinking about ways of retaining this function in one way or other.

If you wish to contact us or send any feedback on the rest of this farewell message please email us at imc-london-contact@lists.indymedia.org

See you on the streets!
IMC London
xXx

SchNEWS: Badgers - a black and white issue

28-09-2012 14:13

Badger activists may have already set back the date of the first pilot cull in Gloucestershire. The first licence was issued here but the company entrusted with carrying out the cull may simply not have enough farmers on board to carry out the killing. Meanwhile in Somerset the licence hasn't even been issued.

SchNEWs: Haigh Stacked

28-09-2012 07:44

The first squatter to be sentenced under the new squatting law has been imprisoned for twelve weeks after being arrested in a long-term empty flat in Islington, London on 2nd September.

21-year-old Alex Haigh had been living in the property for a couple of months before the law came into force, along with other squat-mates – two of whom are now facing the strong arm of law too. One received a fine while the other is awaiting sentence and a possible jail term. A long way from media caricatures of long-haired posh drop outs - Alex is an apprentice bricklayer from Plymouth and had moved to London looking for work

Direct action gets the goods: blockade helps stop 35 people being deported

21-09-2012 15:30

srilanka blockade 9/12
A blockade of Colnbrook and Harmondsworth detention centres on Wednesday (19 September) held up the UK Border Agency's planned deportation of Tamil refugees back to the killing fields of Sri Lanka. With one person D-locked under a deportation coach, the blockade held for 3 1/2 hours, long enough for the deporters to miss their flight slot and for 35 people to get off with legal injunctions.

Police break wheelchair user’s shoulder in peaceful protest

31-08-2012 22:47

Disabled people peacefully protesting against government cuts that are killing disabled people were physically attacked by police in a demonstration outside the Department for Work and Pensions today.

Without any provocation from the peaceful protesters who had gathered to show their support to disabled activists from DPAC, police used heavy handed tactics and pushed the crowd without any concern for the disabled wheelchair users lined up in front of the door despite repeated warning that disabled people were being placed at risk. Their actions resulted in one of the protesters having his shoulder broken. Another wheelchair user’s chair was broken in this unprovoked and disproportionate use of force by the police. The police made several attempts to unbalance protestors at the front of the crowd and broke one man’s glasses.
