Why do activists continue to make use of MySpace? - Calling for a new online social network

After some recent discussion on whether a local critical mass group should set up an account on the social networking site MySpace, some interesting things came to light. The amount of activist and campaign groups using the social networking site is growing. These groups include not only critical mass groups in London, Oxford and Manchester and anarchists from Norwich, Gwent, Ipswich but also bigger initiatives like Earth First (1) | (2), Plane Stupid, the Anarchist Federation (1) | (2) and the Cowley Club in Brighton. Even within the independent media world Democray Now, the Indypendent (1) | (2), and Indymedia (1) | (2) collectives from San Diego, Los Angelos (1) | (2) and Indybay have joined the MySpace craze. All but to name a few really. But is MySpace really the online community I would want to be part of? Looking into its structure and the real reasons behind its existance, I doubt I would.

Six hours of disruption at LNG terminal

Since November there has been lots of protests around the gas pipeline currently being constructed in Wales, and shortly Englans. Today people paid a visit to sunny pembokeshire to take direct action on one of the root causes of climate change; fossil fuel corporations seeking more profits for their shareholders.

John Oneka Okello, 58 from Uganda was detained at Beckett House Immigration Reporting Centre on Saturday 3rd February and currently detained in Tinsley IRC. He has been in the UK seeking asylum for 10 years and his claim has been refused. For the last five years he has not been allowed to work and has received no benefits in that time.

Activists shut down construction of LNG gas terminal in Milford Haven.

Protesters against the continued and unrestrained promotion of fossil fuel projects by the UK government have blockaded the main vehicle access route into the new LNG pipeline terminal near Milford Haven, South Wales. Their aim is to highlight the serious environmental and safety issues surrounding this project, and to call for a more sober approach to the impending energy crisis.

Bernard Mathews given the all clear to ship live birds into exclusion zone

It beggars belief that Bernard Mathews was allowed to continue processing poultry at their Suffolk site during the avian influenza crisis, continued exporting to Hungary, and within days of the slaughter of 159,000 birds, were able to ship live birds into the exclusion zone created around the infected site. Yes, it's business as usual.
