I am a teacher in a technical high school in the northern edge of region of Ruhr. Our school at the present has about 500 students, of which about 40% are immigrants. The recent study [exposing right wing tendencies in schools] captures relatively well what I have been noticing for years. The gulf between children of German background and immigrants is not shrinking; rather, it’s growing steadily, digging in deeper. More and more of those who once stood alongside each other now stand against one another. Racist ideas are spreading.

Closure of landless movement's autonomous schools!

A couple of weeks ago the state governor of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil forcefully closed schools which attended to 600 kids from the encampments of the landless peoples movment in Brazil. The movement runs its own autonomous schools, providing an education specifically tailored to the needs of it's students. Now Landless children are forced to go without an education or travel miles to study in schools where they are subject to discrimination and a curriculum irrelevant to their lives and needs.

Amok run of Winnenden, in Germany, is comprehensible

In a State Media television interview yesterday the German Chancellor Angela Merkel from the Christian Democratic Union Party, CDU, announced the Amok run of Winnenden in the Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, near the regional capital of Stuttgart, as being "incomprehensible". Newcastle Students Occupy!!!

Students at Newcastle University have occupied the fine arts lecture theatre in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine. 25 students took the room and informed the University management who have sent a senior manager to start 'neigotations' which have resulted in the occuption entrying its first night with no clear resolution, as yet.
