News Round-Up From British Occupied Basra

This is a round up of the past few weeks (troops on high alert, 2 massive carbombs planted at the 'mouth' of Basra town, unemployed riots and the head of education in Basra declaring himself King, sorta) but today there was a pretty serious riot with 10 people shot - by Iraqi paramilitary plod and one demonstrator at least shot in the head and killed. The demo - 1500-2000 strong was made up of ex-soldiers fulfilling their promise to escalate their struggle for survival payments from the occupation Administration. Full report on this later.

A weekend of protest, direct action and civil disobedience at military bases throughout the UK. 17th and 18th of January 2004.
A various mix of activist who were present at the Reclaim The Bases Summer Camp have decided to call for another Reclaim The Bases Weekend, calling for groups to organise events at their local military bases on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of January. There is no fixed form for those events, and no fixed meaning. The only guideline is "Reclaim The Bases events should not harm or dehumanise other people"

Here's the first article i've seen on the new EU task force set up to combat "anarchist insurrection" / EU parliament letter bombs. It's also worth noting that at the Paris European Social Forum one of the two main campaigns proposed for mass co-ordinated international protests is against the EU constitution (demos set for May 2004)...

Major AFL-CIO Union, SEIU, Has New Local Leadership in the “Cradle of Liberty”

Just in time to ring in the New Year, new local union leadership has been elected in Philadelphia, USA, the “Cradle of Liberty”. On December 13, members of Local 36 of the 1.6 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest in the AFL-CIO, elected a new president, secretary-treasurer and 23 Executive Board members. This came in the 18th month of a national SEIU trusteeship over Local 36, which represents over 4,300 janitors, building maintenance workers, technicians and professionals in Philadelphia and its suburbs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
