This collaboration between Bristol Feminists Network and Bristol Indymedia film presents the powerful documentary Africa Rising.

From the Horn of Africa to the Western shores of the sub-Saharan nations, everyday 6,000 girls are subjected to a practice called female genital mutilation or FGM. And everyday with little more than fierce determination and deep love for their communities, brave activists are leading the path against all odds to break the silence about this centuries-old tradition. Together, these women and men have created a formidable grassroots movement to end FGM. Africa Rising is an extraordinary film presenting an insightful look at the frontlines of a quiet revolution taking the African continent by storm. Covering rural stories from accross the continent, Africa Rising will leave the viewer cheering for those unlikey heroes who share their conviction that ending female genital mutilation is within our reach and visible on the horizon.

Naana Otoo-Oyortey MBE, & Director of Forward and Efua Dorkenoo from Equality Now who helped to make the film will also be speaking. Efua will give an introduction into the film and will also be able to answer questions about what is happening now.

Africa Rising will be showing at the Bristol Indymedia film night at the Cube cinema, Dove St, Bristol. BS2 8JD, on the 5th Sept 2011 at 8pm entry is £3/£4 but nobody refused for lack of funds. Full Info is here.

Masterfully directed by Paul Heredia, Africa rising paints an intimate portrait of courageous indiviuals with dignity and strength, whose passion for justice is changing the course of history. The film celebrates girls like Beatrice and Edna Kandie, who fled their home after learning their father was planning to cut them, and succeeded in getting a court protection order against him; the film also features the moving story of Fanta Camara from Mali, who despite years of suffering from injuries as a result of FGM, blossoms into a bright, young woman. Other girls, however, have faced ultimate tragedy, such as Tato, a female anti-FGM activist who lost her life to FGM.

3000 police on standby for EDL demo

01-09-2011 22:55

Ahead of the EDL protest activists describe the call for a ban a mistake, although the East London Pride parade in three weeks time is given the go ahead. Meanwhile the MET says it has 3,000 officers ready to deploy on Saturday.

THE Metropolitan Police have said they are preparing to deploy up to 3,000 officers to the streets of East London this weekend to prevent clashes between two ideologically opposed groups.

The English Defence League, a far-right organisation that says it opposes radical Islam, and anti-fascist groups, Unite Against Fascism and United East End, will hold separate static protests in Whitechapel on Saturday after a recent banning order prevented them from marching.

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, imposed the 30-day ban that now covers six London boroughs after a request by police following a campaign by local politicians and community groups calling for the march to be stopped.

Campaigners in Tower Hamlets, which has a significant Muslim population, accuse the EDL of being Islamaphobic and divisive to community relations, which it denies.

Following the ruling Luthar Rahman, the Mayor and de facto leader of Tower Hamlets Council, has called for people planning to march against the EDL to 'stand down'.

However Martain Smith, UAF's national officer, called for as many people as possible to attend.

He also reacted angrily to the ban saying it should not have applied to the UAF and UEE and that it was a mistake to call for it.

He said: “I'm getting tired of being treated the same as fascists. I don't want Theresa May or the police deciding how anti-fascism operates. We need a different strategy. I have some sympathy to those who want bans [but] I think they are a waste of time.”

There are concerns that the blanket ban on marches is an attack on civil liberties and legitimate protest, although, the East London Pride march on September 24 has been given the go-ahead.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's has found itself embroiled in a row it knew nothing about after Smith said the EDL will protest on the roof of the supermarket chain's Whitechapel store car park and asked why they were allowing the EDL to use their land.

But a Sainsbury's press officer said she knew nothing about the arrangement but admitted the car park may belong to the council or private landlord who could have given consent.

The Metropolitan police refused to disclose the location.

The EDL's website is directing its members to meet at unspecified predetermined points before being escorted to the site by police.

The UAF and UEE, who are coaching in supporters from across the country, will hold their counter-protest close to East London Mosque, in Whitechapel.

High profile artists including Nitin Sahwny, Asian Dub Foundation and Radio 1 DJ Nihal are set to play at the event, organisers said.

Anti-fascist prisoner support in Nottingham

01-09-2011 21:55

Nottingham Anarchist Black Cross have organised a series of events to support anarchist and class struggle prisoners, with particular focus given to the anti-fascist prisoner support UK campaign. A gig on Thursday was headlined by Belgian band Cop on Fire with Half Boy/Half Rat supporting and a second gig on Tuesday featured the ReSistas, Hectic Egg and El Dia. The anti-fascist prisoners support campaign is supporting antifascists jailed after an altercation with fascists at Welling railway station in 2009. More than two years later 7 were convicted of conspiracy to commit violent disorder in May this year and 6 have been sentenced to between 15 and 21 months in prison. None of the fascists were arrested. A second trial will take place next month.

Nottingham EDL organiser poses with a gun

01-09-2011 19:55

A recent expose of the English Defence League by Hope not Hate features a photo of James Clarke, described as Nottingham EDL Organiser, posing with a weapon. The article shows no fewer than 15 EDL members all posing with firearms, including Joel Titus, the EDL's Youth Leader. The far right have always loved guns and posing like hardmen but in the wake of the Norway massacre this takes on a more chilling aspect (not least because there were links between Anders Behring Breivik and the EDL).

After the Norway massacre, EDL leader Stephen Lennon (AKA Tommy Robinson) warned that the UK was only 5 years away from a similar massacre here. For a group that has always claimed to be against violent extremism the EDL is finding its own links to violent far right terrorism harder and harder to hide. The British state has decided to monitor them with the counter terror unit.

Much thought I dislike the agenda of Hope not Hate/Searchlight, which seems to be to strengthen state power against anti-state groups of the right and left (just witness their lobbying which resulted in a ban on ALL marches in 5 London boroughs for a month), they've done some good research here and it's worth checking out. We need to root out these Rambo wannabes and show them in no uncertain terms that their fascist ideology will be defeated.

To Avert A Bloodbath - Libya And The Press - Part 1

01-09-2011 19:02

From the allegedly liberal left to Murdoch’s hard right, the media spectrum continues to shine green for 'go' on the Libyan war. An Independent on Sunday (IoS) editorial on August 28 observes:

‘This newspaper supported Nato's military intervention, and Britain's part in it, when it began in March, but it was a choice between hard and complex options – and so it remains.’

01-09-2011 18:52

Diederik Jeangout and Michael Dilissen of How To Save The Bluefin
The European conservation organisation The Black Fish and the Belgian organisation How To Save The Bluefin have merged as of today in an effort to build a stronger alliance in the fight against bluefin tuna overfishing. The two organisations will continue together as one under the banner of The Black Fish. Diederik Jeangout and Michael Dilissen of How To Save The Bluefin are happy with the move: "Bluefin tuna needs our attention and we are serious about achieving real change for this endangered fish.
