Fukushima Disaster - One Year Later

12-03-2012 22:59

Audio
Government lies, Tokyo radioactive, current status of 3 out-of-control reactors. New speech by nuclear expert Arnold Gundersen to Vancouver conference March 11th, organized by Physicians for Global Survival. Plus a unique report of citizen activism in Japan, as parents measure radiation in their air, food, and children. Reports from Aya Marumori & Wataru Iwata of CRMS from Fukushima. Bottom line: when disaster strikes (whether nuclear, hurricanes, floods, etc) - big government hides the truth, and will not help. We have to organize and act as local communities to survive.

bikes alive bike blockade protest at king's cross

12-03-2012 22:55

earlier this evening, a couple of dozen cyclists brought a little chaos to the junctions outside king's cross station in protest at new revelations over TfL's complicity in road deaths there.

despite dozens of deaths and injuries to cyclists at the dangerous king's cross road intersections, it has recently come to light that between 2005 and 2009, TfL actually instructed its planners to ignore the needs of cyclists (http://kingscrossenvironment.com/2012/03/05/buchananreport).

also, where the planners, buchanan and partners, made bicycle-friendly recommendations, their draft report was watered down by TfL before final publication (http://kingscrossenvironment.com/2012/03/07/did-tfl-weaken-pro-cycling-recommendations-for-killer-kings-cross-junction-as-long-ago-as-2007).

tonight's protest, attracting just a couple of dozen cyclists and pedestrians, held up traffic by processing slowly in a route up and down the euston road outside the station, while more than 200 explanatory leaflets were distributed to passers-by. it was the latest in a series of fortnightly actions, and the next one, to which all pedestrians and human-powered vehicles are invited, will begin promptly at 6.30pm on monday the 26th march.

later that week, friday 30th will celebrate the 15th anniversary of critical mass in london.

Brazil, Amazonia, Forest Code: A million square KM* to devastation.

12-03-2012 22:10

Emilio de Lima
As the soil of the Amazon is very thin, brought by the waters and built by the forest with rotting logs, leaves, carcasses, feces, seeds and other natural features, the felling of trees stops soil fixing and the multimilenar reconstruction of the ground and exports the soil in the form of soy, or disaggregates it with the weight of thousands of heads of cattle livestock.

12-03-2012 18:52

Angie Zelter
British peace activist and nobel prize nominee Angie Zelter is amongst those who have been arrested in ongoing protests against the building of a new naval base on Jeju Island in South Korea. The military base is due to be built on the island which was named an “Island of World Peace” by the South Korean government in 2005. Local villagers and activists have raised concerns over the environmental destruction of the island, which has several UNESCO World Heritage sites, and its potential to escalate military tensions in the region.

Each economic crisis is used to ratchet down living standards and workers' rights. However, nothing like the current assault since the continuing financial crisis of 2008 has been seen since the 1930s. At stake now is all that has been fought for since then. This is no ordinary crisis.

Anna Soubry MP Avoids Demonstration Against NHS

11-03-2012 22:55

On Saturday March 10th, constituents of Anna Soubry's Broxtowe constituency displayed postcards signed by over 500 people asking her to reconsider plans to privatise the NHS.

They gathered outside Beeston Library where Anna Soubry was meant to be holding a surgery. Unfortunately when Ms Soubry heard of this she changed the location of her surgery.
On a previous Saturday in Beeston local people had queued to sign the postcards. Public feeling against the governments Health Bill was strong.
It is a pity that Ms Soubry avoided this visual display of her constituents views.

Another Attempt To Sabotage John Bowden’s Parole By Prison Hired Social Worker

11-03-2012 20:44

It seems that the state and its loyal agents in HMP Shotts, Scotland, are currently manufacturing reasons to present to the parole board as to why John Bowden should be kept in jail.

One of the entries in the ‘Parole Intelligence Summary’ says: “Intelligence provides that Bowden either posts blogs or has them posted on his behalf on the following website:  http://breakallchains.blogspot.com/. Further intelligence provides that this website is pro-prisoner and anti-establishment.

So it seems that even writing anything supporting prisoners’ rights is sufficient reason to keep John in jail – he’s not being kept in because they consider him a risk to the public.

Here is the latest article from John and contact address for complaints and also to write to him.
