Mass Deportation to DRC tomorrow - press release from the Bishop of Durham

25-02-2007 19:47

The Government has just set back the date for a review of the 'Country Guidance' given in relation to the Congo, i.e. the guidance on the advisability of sending people back there. The case was to have been heard on March 7, but it has now been postponed. It is strange that almost at once the Home Office has begun rounding up Congolese in order to deport them. Are these two events perhaps connected? Is the government keen to get rid of Congolese people while it still can?

The ‘war on terror’ and the terror of war

25-02-2007 19:10

The casting of the ‘‘war on terrorism’’ as a war fought on behalf of or for civilization against some less-than-civilized other -- terrorists and their cohorts -- is a significant point that cannot be allowed to pass unexamined.

Media Alert: Iran in Iraq

25-02-2007 17:49

Media corporations have an awesome ability to fail to learn even the most obvious lessons from the recent past. In discussing allegations made against Iran in 2007, for example, it is often as though Iraq 2002-2003 never happened. The same journalists receiving the same propaganda from the same government sources respond with the same credulity and the same indifference to the human consequences.

Killers in the Classroom

25-02-2007 17:37

During a heated debate in a class I teach on social justice, several US Marines who had done tours in Iraq told me that they had "sacrificed" by “serving” in Iraq so that I could enjoy the freedom to teach in the USA. Parroting their master’s slogan about “fighting over there so we don’t have to fight over here”, these students proudly proclaimed that they terrorized and killed defenseless Iraqis. They intimated that their Arab victims are nothing more to them than collateral damage, incidental to their receipt of some money and an education.

Demands for an investigation into coercion of nations by the US during the vote against Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), have been growing following the revelations by a former ranking official of the Bush administration acknowledging that India's votes at the IAEA in 2005 and 2006 had been "coerced."

Coal and Wayuu in Venezuela

25-02-2007 16:21

“We will not be removed from the lands where our ancestors are buried. We are defending the animals, the forests and the water. This planet can’t withstand any more contamination. What good is all this wealth from oil and coal if we are dying of diseases and misery? Several years ago they pushed out some of our people to make a coal mine. In that region the animals, the fish, the birds and the people are all sick. Now they want us to move again so they can make more mines, but there is nowhere to go. We will defend our lands and our heritage with our lives.”
– Jorge Montiel, Wayuu leader, Venezuela

Will America Face the Truth About 9/11?

25-02-2007 11:06

If we have the courage to face the fact that our nation has descended into a swamp of corruption and evil, perhaps we can still salvage the future for ourselves and our children. We should draw strength from the knowledge that the 9/11 nightmare, bad as it was, might have been even worse.

The Muslim BNP

25-02-2007 00:37

A breakdown of the views held by local Birmingham resident Gina Khan, who claims to be challenging radical islam, but instead seems to have been giving the media all the irresponsible scapegoating they could want. Her views mirror those of the BNP and were she not Muslim herself, you would think they were the words of the far-right! I have below The Times' article with her quotes and my response.
