Landmark Case on Children / EM (Lebanon) v SSHD

29-10-2008 08:51

In the case of EM (Lebanon) v SSHD [2008] UKHL 64 the House of Lords looked at Article 8 again (having done so earlier this year as well) and delivered another landmark judgment. It is believed to be the first time in European legal history that a higher court has found that a future, foreign breach of a non-absolute human right would be sufficiently serious so as to prohibit the victim’s removal to the country where there is a real risk the breach would take place.

10th United Friends and Family Demo. In pictures.

27-10-2008 18:11

2008 marks the tenth year that the bereaved relatives of those who have died at the hands of the state have taken to the streets. This year the Police kept a low profile and mostly a respectful distance from the families. The optimist could say that they have learned their lesson and decided to do things differently after their actions on the 2007 parade see:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/11/384896.html

Meanwhile the cynic might suggest that they knew damn well that there would be a lot more media interest this year. Due to the de Menezes enquirey, and the presence of Jean Charles' family on the demo. And were therefore told to be on their best behaviour? There was certainly three times more journalists present than last time. Take your pick.

Below are some pictures of the day:

On Saturday 25th October 2008, the tenth annual United Families and
Friends Remembrance procession took place, with several hundred people in
attendance, including many family members of those who have died in
suspicious circumstances in police custody, prison and 'secure' mental

26-10-2008 03:01

The US government had a hand in formulating the policy platform of the Tsvangirai faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, and funded community-based newsletters to create a platform to persuade Zimbabweans to accept Washington’s point of view, according to a US government report. The report boasts that Washington is the undisputed leader in nurturing anti-government civil society organizations in Zimbabwe, operating through a CIA-interlocked organization led by former New York investment banker and Michael Milken right-hand man, Peter Ackerman.
