The Party's Over

13-10-2003 13:37

With the end of the Tory Party Conference last week we saw the end of the boring party political season, at least for the three main political parties. Did the mainstream media have nothing better to report? For the three main parties, it was about power, power for them to retain or gain power. For the Tories and Neo-Labour it was about the leader remaining in power. The people did not figure at all, for Neo-Labour, even their own members did not seem to count.

But it does not always have to be thus. There are alternatives.

PLANS FOR MILITARY INTERVENTION BY THE US ON THE ISLAND OF CUBA

12-10-2003 15:18

AT this moment, nobody doubts that the Bush administration’s new foreign policy is basically one of military intervention, without respecting international institutions or world public opinion. The excuse of fighting terrorism has been demonstrated as the perfect alibi to substitute the previous one: the threat of Communism during the Cold war. Other less effective reasons lie behind it, not so effective as the anti-drug fight. The silence of the United Nations after the Iraq invasion, the European Union (EU)’s copycat behavior and the ferocious control it maintains on the great majority of Arab countries via puppet dictators thus guaranteeing impunity to the U.S. government.
The United States has not forgotten to send out sound bites on its next military objectives — Syria, Korea, Iran and Cuba. Just as in Iraq, the strategy begins by sowing seeds in international institutions, friendly governments and world public opinion suggesting complicity with international terrorism in those countries that are the object of intervention.

Chomsky: Dominance and its Dilemmas

11-10-2003 15:56

October 10, 2003

The past year has been a momentous one in world affairs. In the normal rhythm, the pattern was set in September, a month marked by several important and closely related events. The most powerful state in history announced a new National Security Strategy asserting that it will maintain global hegemony permanently: any challenge will be blocked by force, the dimension in which the US reigns supreme. At the same time, the war drums began to beat to mobilize the population for an invasion of Iraq, which would be "the first test [of the doctrine], not the last," the New York Times observed after the invasion, "the petri dish in which this experiment in pre-emptive policy grew." And the campaign opened for the mid-term congressional elections, which would determine whether the administration would be able to carry forward its radical international and domestic agenda.

Re:||Hash - thoughts on anti-EU actions in Rome

09-10-2003 18:27

These are some notes of the actions against the EU inter-governmental meeting to discuss a European constitution that occurred in Rome on October the 4th, one the biggest post Genoa street mobilisations by the Italian movement. The notes should be read as mere observations, they are the reflections of one person who has been in Italy for a only 2 months. The impossibility to create a general understanding of the Italian movement(s) should be taken into consideration, there is too much complicated history to make more than the most tentative understandings.

Socialist Strategy in California

08-10-2003 19:31

They say a socialist could never win in California for one reason: too much sun, fun and gun. Sure, the heterogeneity of community and lifestyle tend to favour some kind of liberalism, but socialism in a place where it hardly ever rains? Forget it!

Okay, so the above is a desperate caricature, but it makes about as much sense as the arguments made by the liberal-left for voting Democrat or keeping Gray Davis in power...
