Is economic growth sustainable?

04-02-2009 23:03

The debate surrounding the extent to which the burning of fossil fuels leads to climate change misses a more fundamental point. That is, fossil fuels are an inherently finite resource. This resource is dwindling at an accelerating rate as economies such as those of China and India expand rapidly. Fossil fuels will run out. Maybe not in the next 10, 20 or 30 years but they will run out.

A new mobilisation could revitalise politics in the UK - but only if you get inv

04-02-2009 22:52

For the first time in my life I resent paying my taxes. Until now I have seen this annual amputation as a civic duty - like giving blood - necessary to sustain the life of a fair society. Suddenly I see it as an imposition. Its purpose has reverted to that of the middle ages: subsidising the excesses of a parasitic class. A high proportion of the taxes I pay will be used to bail out companies which have used every imaginable ruse to avoid paying any themselves.

Did Thatcher offer ‘the Obama effect’ for women?

04-02-2009 22:00

A recent post about Obama being a role model for black people made me think about Lady Thatcher - the woman outside of her politics - seeking a path to power in context of Barack Obama and his journey to power.

War on Bankers - Snowball fights theory and practice

04-02-2009 21:56

As someone who has never really been entranced by the internal combustion engine fad that has swept through the world in recent decades, I tend to walk most places. However, given the snow on the ground today, I, along with many others, was presented with a number of ethical and practical issues; namely, how to deal with snowballs.

Obama’s $825 Billion Stimulus Plan Offers Too Little, Too Late

04-02-2009 20:05

Within the past two years, Democrats in Washington DC have spent more than $1.5 trillion to help rescue the struggling U.S. economy out of the worst recession since the Great Depression; now, both Houses of Congress are fast-tracking a stimulus package for President Barack Obama that will likely cost the nation more than $1 trillion. Socialists nationwide are rejecting this new call for deficit spending and are calling for programs that will meet the short and long term needs of the nation and create immediate employment for the millions of working people that are unemployed or under-employed.

High Court Australia pervert justice, cause injury leading to deaths

02-02-2009 21:24

How High Court Australia conspire to pervert justice, and to cause injury leading to deaths

Dear Australian Parliament and the Australian Federal Police,

I give notice of a Judicial and Constitutional crisis in the Australian legal system.

By giving me authority to join to my action, ALL actions against Mr John Wilson are now suspended until the High Court Australia determines all Questions of Law, and Notices of a constitutional matter.

A judicial and constitutional crisis means a void in jurisdiction of all legal proceedings in the Australian legal system.

Gaza New Siege Mechanism

02-02-2009 17:49

Israel, the occupying power, is determined to keep a tight grip on the reconstruction process, which is why it sustained its closure of the border crossing following its "unilateral" ceasefire. Indeed, this is why it declared the ceasefire unilaterally: it did not want to be bound by any agreement -- the Egyptian initiative or any other framework -- that would oblige it to lift the embargo, if only partially, in order to facilitate reconstruction.

Israel Asserting Middle East Supremacy: From Gaza to Tehran

02-02-2009 14:53

"The New Middle East"
Just as Nazi Germany interpreted the passivity, sympathy and impotence of the West when confronted by ‘facts on the ground’ as license for aggression, the Israeli military machine receives a powerful impetus for bigger and bloodier wars to establish Israel’s supremacy and dominance of the Middle East, from the Red Sea to the Persian Gulf.

Why the police riot? - part 3

02-02-2009 01:32

Masked & Anonymous - public order policing in Parliament Square, 31st Jan 2009
The British police public order manual is a secret document establishing a paramilitary third force in the UK, under the control of a private company (ACPO) with permission from the home office. It's long overdue that more information about this was in the public domain.

This is part 3 of a series, for parts 1 and 2 see:

Ceasefires, Israeli-Style

02-02-2009 01:04

Waging war while talking peace is customary Israeli practice. Israel's unilateral declaration of cease-fire notwithstanding, nothing changed.

Gaza remains occupied, under siege, and totally isolated and attacks merely downshifted to a lower gear. Gaza continues to be terrorized.

President Obama, Don't Become Complicit in Their Crimes!

01-02-2009 21:01

On Thursday, January 29th, I sent President Obama this message:

"Mr. President: The Bush Administration lied to the people in pursuit of war. As a result, at least one million Iraqis and thousands of U.S. soldiers are dead. Thousands more are maimed. The stature of the U.S. is severely damaged. The U.S. Constitution is in shreds after signing statements, wiretaps, and torture. Your obligation is to investigate and bring to justice those who violated U.S. and international law, such as the torture treaty. Failure to do so makes you complicit in their crimes."

War on Gaza: Israeli Action, Not Reaction

Israeli 22 – day military operation, dubbed “Cast Lead,” against the Palestinian Gaza Strip was “not simply a reaction,” but “a calculation," Daniel Klaidman wrote in Newsweek on January 10.

The Icelandic Government has collapsed and some people talk about a revolution. In a way it is true. Ordinary people overthrew this neoliberal government by writing articles, holding speeches, noise demonstrations, bonfires, car horns, direct action, civil disobedience and minor sabotage.
