24-01-2008 16:38I need to talk to you about hope. I need to warn you about having it, for merely by having hope you could become nothing more than a bundle of ineffectual good intentions. Hope could, in fact, be the single most dangerous thing to have in the environmental struggle we need to face up to.
24-01-2008 15:23In a unbelievable presentation to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil and Gas on 16th January BP's Special Economic Advisor Peter Davies (no other oil company was prepared to address this group) claimed that "there's a distinct possibility that global oil consumption could peak as a result of climate policies" -- in other words NOT because supply problems but because of a reduction in demand! If you believe that governments around the world are going all out to reduce oil demand and switch to renewables then perhaps you might believe this... Of course they are not...
The APPGOPO Press Release on this presentation, which links to a MP3 of the event, follows, this presentation is being discussed on the PowerSwitch forum: http://www.powerswitch.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6231
24-01-2008 10:23The US stock market experienced its most volatile trading since 2002 on Wednesday, opening in near panic and plummeting more than 300 points before a late day rally that brought the Dow Jones up by 2.5 percent, erasing the sharp decline of the past three days. The S&P 500 rose by 2.53 percent, and the NASDAQ by 1.05 percent.

23-01-2008 23:40A humourous look at the medium that is television. Or perhaps specificly those who watch it and why. And why they probably shouldn't. Enjoy!
23-01-2008 14:56The US central bank made its deepest interest rate cut in a quarter of a century Tuesday in an attempt to prevent a two-day wave of sell-offs on world financial markets from sweeping through Wall Street. The Federal Reserve Board announced its decision to cut its target interest rate by .75 percent barely an hour before the New York Stock Exchange reopened following a Monday shutdown in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
22-01-2008 07:34Stock prices plummeted worldwide Monday, amid heightened fears of a US recession. While over the course of last week US financial markets suffered the worst fall since 2002, with the Down Jones Industrial Average dropping by 5 percent, many Asian and European indices dropped by a similar amount in just one day. It was the biggest one-day fall in world stock markets since September 11, 2001. Industrial stocks fell together with financial, suggesting that the US credit crisis, hitherto confined mainly to the banking and mortgage sectors, is spilling over into the real economy worldwide.
21-01-2008 20:19The FTSE 100 lost 5.5% today, if that happens for another twenty days there is no FTSE 100. The entire edifice of global capitalism has difficulties, meanwhile, the UK politicians and their media witter on about one failed building society.
Given the absence of any serious commentary on the situation here, please allow me to introduce you to 'Kunstler' of 'Long Emergency' fame. There is some 'told you so' shadenfraude to his view of the situation, you can follow his blog over time to see if things get less 'gleeful'. Thankyou.
21-01-2008 16:58"Gordon Brown has begun secret talks with other world leaders on far-reaching reform of the United Nations Security Council as part of a drive to create a "new world order" and "global society".

It references some recent campaigns specific to Bristol, but the comments can be taken generally. The article is copied below for those interested, the original, with 'comments', can be seen here http://www.bristol.indymedia.org/newswire.php?story_id=27274
17-01-2008 20:26It is no secret that the 2008 presidential tour of George W. Bush Jr. to the Middle East is more about rallying hostility and antagonism against Iran and those forces resisting Washington’s political and socio-economic curriculum for the Middle East.
17-01-2008 16:45The second issue of Shift Magazine has just been published. It compares the politics of climate camp and no borders camp, includes an interview with the spacehijackers, and has a review of the 8 Dec. Climate March. We have posted the editorial below:
15-01-2008 16:05What is clear is the fact that major corporations are collectively hedging their bets, financing both sides. For example, Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have money behind every leading candidate. Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, and UBS are also prominent players, in virtually all of the camps.
15-01-2008 09:19Having given no support to Turkey’s struggle against the PKK for a long time, the US supported the Turkish army’s recent bombing of the Qandil mountain.
The reason behind this support is becoming clear now: An agreement made between the US, Turkey and the Federal Administration of South Kurdistan for the construction in South and North Kurdistan [i.e. Northern Iraq and Southeastern Turkey respectively] of two strategic US military bases targeting Iran.
14-01-2008 21:45"In response to the government's 'consultation' on managing protest around parliament we should not need to ask permission from 'the state' to demonstrate against 'the state'."
