Bolivia: one year into the Morales government

20-01-2007 18:43

Masses go onto the offensive, MAS government delays taking action

Popular assembly in Cochabamba on January 16

On Tuesday, January 16th, a massive cabildo abierto (popular assembly) in Cochabamba, Bolivia's third largest city, decided to remove the prefecto (regional governor) and forced the consejeros departamentales (regional councillors) to install a people's prefecture. In doing so the masses, who have been on the streets since the beginning of the year, went over the heads of MAS aligned leaders of many of the peasant and trade union organisations and directly against the advice of the MAS government which recommended calm, negotiation and keeping everything within the legal framework.

This was the highest point of a developing mass movement for the resignation of the prefectos of La Paz and Cochabamba who have sided with the opposition prefectos of Santa Cruz, Beni, Pando and Tarija (the lowlands crescent of Bolivia) in their struggle for autonomy from the MAS national government and to defend their right of veto in the Constituent Assembly.

Perfect Contradiction and Double Standards

20-01-2007 09:19

The People's Republic of China has successfully destroyed one of its own satellites with a ground to space ballistic missile – the message was not lost on some superpowers! America has expressed outrage and has marshalled western nations to voice their condemnation and “demand” a full explanation from the Chinese Government. The new USA certainly is a huge departure from the old, it seems that creating a living hell in the Middle East with hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths to its credit, is acceptable behaviour but China shooting down a piece of its own space junk is an offensive, outrageous act requiring a full explanation!

Israel-Palestine Peace Overture: More of the Same as Shock and Awe of Iran looms

20-01-2007 02:12

Of course, the “establishment of a Palestinian state” is not on the agenda, or at least not the sort of state envisioned by the Palestinians. Instead, the Palestinians will receive more of the same terminating in a series of isolated Bantustans surrounded by Israeli checkpoints and military garrisons.

Shilpa Shetty: When Racism Isn’t Racism

19-01-2007 09:34

The row in Britain, and now in India, over the racist behaviour directed towards Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty during the celebrity game show "Big Brother" raises several questions, beyond this specific case, about the notion of racism itself. What has been highlighted is a widespread and persistent failure to come to terms with the meaning and nature of racism and what constitutes racist behaviour. The current debate therefore provides an opportunity to discuss an issue that has escaped widespread, serious consideration for far too long.

Convenient Coincidences

19-01-2007 05:07

Analysts are trained to give special attention to what appears to be coincidence. A good example of this today would be the current hysteria in the UK over the racial vilification of an Indian actress on some inane TV show and ‘coincidentally’, in Australia, the mysterious ‘surfacing’ of an extremist DVD allegedly produced by an Australian Wahhabist Muslim. The mass media of both these nations is saturated by these attention-stealing ‘stories’. The attention of the respective populations has been conveniently diverted away from coalition forces quietly preparing for a nuclear attack on Iran. It could also be argued that the racist card is being utilised to soften western populations to the use of nuclear weapons – after all, unwashed Arabs and Persians are expendable, aren’t they?

Democrat Agenda Omissions

19-01-2007 00:52

It gets even worse, as it always does, as not a word is heard from Democrats that the Bush administration through lies and deceit committed what the Nuremberg Tribunal called the "supreme international crime" of illegal aggression against a country posing no threat to us or its neighbors. The new Congress also said nothing about what former UN head of Iraqi humanitarian relief called an act of genocide against the Iraqi people when he resigned from his post in anger and disgust in 1998.

Australian PM outlines indefinite military agenda in South Pacific

18-01-2007 09:43

Interventions in the South Pacific
The billions of dollars in public funds being poured into the military represent a massive social misappropriation. While funding for public health and education, social infrastructure, and welfare and social services have all been gutted by successive state and federal governments, “defence” spending has skyrocketed. Australia is now the eleventh largest military spender in the world and ranks ahead of countries such as Israel, Turkey, Brazil, and Iran.

Australia: More race hate from the political and mass media establishment

18-01-2007 07:22

All we're going to get is islamophobia
Big media switches over to super race hate campaigns again no doubt to cover up for John Howard, while he gets a buzz in Broome WA on holidays? Or is this what we're going to get until their big media and political establishment can once again shrug off their responsibilities and complicity in their wide spread lies and hate at home and their killing in Iraq, which includes torture, and rendition. Once again this is about what someone is alleged to have said, all ears open. But what about corruption who's going to deal with that? Hey Howard? What about you Dud? No not big media! If it's left up to big media all we're going to get is islamophobia because it suits them, is divisive and is a great way to cover-up for their lack of responsibility. Thanks!

Top Pentagon Official Calls for Boycott of Law Firms

18-01-2007 03:42

To boycott law firms
A top Pentagon official last week urged U.S. corporations to boycott law firms whose attorneys represent detainees at the US prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In a radio interview last week, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs Charles “Cully” Stimson said companies might wish to shun firms that represent “the very terrorists who hit their bottom line back in 2001.” Stimson apologized after his remarks were condemned by the American Bar Association and deans from more than 130 law schools. We speak with the co-author of the law school petition and a corporate lawyer representing six Guantanamo prisoners

Sleaze Vaz was 'champion' of Muslims against Rushdie in 1989!

17-01-2007 14:42

The disgraced 'ethnic' MP Keith Sleaze Vaz has had a quite hectic 24 hours in the media and Westminster spotlight. He is now part of an almost ubiquitous gang of India-capitalism-Right-linked spin operatives doing what Blair has been doing - promoting British commercial and related interests on the huge market for capitalism that is many [and the mainly westernised centres in the selected, northern and southern belt] states of India. Vaz hit the British PMQs this lunchtime. As he did Jon Snow on Channel 4 News last night. On the surface, on the issue of Shilpa Shetty being allegedly bullied and racistly attacked on Channel 4 CBBH. So who is reviving the career and the operation - of Sleaze Vaz. The resurfacing of the Slimy, Sleazy Vaz spells political and democratic disaster for most of the disenfranchised ethnicity-described people in the UK

Bush administration provokes open war on Iran

16-01-2007 22:53

The neocons led by Bush-Cheney-Rice are hell-bent on forcing their original and only geostrategic plan, "finishing the job" of a conquest of the Middle East, Central Asia, the Persian Gulf, the Horn of Africa and a nuclear holocaust, during their remaining two years in power.
