A Clever Admission of Racism

07-05-2005 16:36

Sometimes admissions of racism can be a healthy and open acceptance of responsibility for collective or individual sins of White privilege. Sometimes these admissions are cynical ploys aimed at normalizing racial abuse.

Seems hard to believe but it's almost a year now since the rampART opened. To celebrate, there will be a party on the 21st May (look out for details closer to the time).

In the meantime, rampART is inviting submissions from people who have made use of the space to help reflect on twelve months of activity.

George Galloway wins in Bethnal Green.

07-05-2005 12:14

Launch rally Liverpool st.
Whatever you think of Galloway and his politics (most people seem to have an opinion) this much is true:

He could have quite easily led a comfortable retirement with the 1/4 million he has been awarded in compensation for the media hate campaign run against him during the war. His integrity would have stayed intact.

Instead he has spent his time and libel damages on giving Tony Blair the kick in the ballots he so richly deserves. It's true that just one MP will not change much but there is now a voice in parliament that will not be silenced by party whips. A voice that supports the Palestinians, the Iraqi resistance and condemns the 'War on Terror' and the erosion of our civil liberties. That will really, really piss off New Labour.

It also has to be said that Oona King was one of the more repulsive characters served up by Blair and his mates so good riddance to her.

The 2005 General Election

06-05-2005 12:43

There have long been governments resting on a minority of the electorate, but so long as turnout overall remained reasonably high, politicians could dismiss those who did not vote and not have to worry about their democratic legitimacy. But when six out of 10 young people do not vote, as well as, first indications suggest nearly one-third of women over 55 - traditionally the most civic-minded - then the alarm bells ring.

Anti Election in Balsall Heath

05-05-2005 21:58

It was all a bit last minute but activists in Balsall Heath managed to get 200 A2 anti-election posters out fly-posted in the area. We didn’t manage to get round to taking down the ‘Vote for me’ boards up the lampposts as we normally do, but there’s still time to do that, so that we have boards ready to put up lampposts next time, obviously with our own designs on.

Iraq-o-mat: Cleaning Dollars for Corporations

05-05-2005 08:23

Corporations profiting from Iraq
Much of the post-war corporate activity in Iraq has come under heavy criticism from many different fronts. There are accusations of corruption, bribery and nepotism as well as simple incompetence - the jobs just aren't getting done... So what is all the `reconstruction' activity in Iraq really about? Supposedly post-war Iraq is a neo-liberal utopia, an economy freed of the tiresome and inefficient burdens of government regulation. Yet an examination of this same economy may lead one to conclude that the system as it stands is rampant with inefficiency. Indeed Iraq's economy today looks less like an economic utopia than a giant money-laundering operation...
