Migrant Support Volunteer Arrested in NW France

27-02-2009 17:19

In recent months a number of volunteers for French migrant support groups have been arrested. This appears to be a deliberate policy on the part of the French judiciary and police as the Sarkozy governement increases repressive measures against the hundreds of migrants in the area.

Heroes of law and order

27-02-2009 11:21

There's a couple of classic cop tales in the post today. The first concerns a Notts cop who accused a mechanic of stealing his sunglasses from the car he was working on and arrested and searched the poor guy before his mate found them still in the car. The other concerns two Notts police arrested over misappropriation of union funds.

Defeating Complaints, Creating Rage by John Bowden

27-02-2009 09:57

The liberal argument that internal prison justice and the equitable resolution of prisoners' grievances is a critically important factor in maintaining the equilibrium and legitimacy of prison regimes, while also preventing the widespread embitterment of a group of people already significantly in conflict with the system, is obviously true in a particular sense. In the closed and hidden world of prison where the guards and system they enforce wield an omnipotent degree of power over prisoners the manner in which prisoners' complaints and grievances are dealt with will inevitably determine whether that power is frequently abused or mediated with at least some semblance of fairness and lawfulness.

Act Now - Reclaim journalism re:Sri Lanka

27-02-2009 03:59

Vithyatharan, the latest casualty of the killing of journalism seems saved momentarily as the international attention is focussed on his violent abduction. The government and police seem to have produced him inside the system in a nondescript Colombo police station but for how long?
As the UK parliament is being forced to act due to the mounting pressures of UK Tamils and other activists its inertia due to recent 'War on Terror and Truth' needs a push from us all. Act Now.

Police spending through the roof but little protection against crime

26-02-2009 07:56

Police today were getting a proper slagging off in the media this morning after the think tank 'Reform' published a damning report on policing in this country. The report, A New Force, found the current 43 forces operate as inefficient and expensive fiefdoms run by chief constables who are only accountable to weak police authorities. Meanwhile the UK taxpayer cough up more for policing than any other leading country yet the police fail to protect them from either serious or local crime. Sadly no media report I saw makes the connection between the inefficiency of the police on tackling crime and their increasing focus on politic policing.

On February 19th and 20th, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Adriana Stumpo, 23; Nathan Pope, 26; Joseph Buddenberg, 25; and Maryam Khajavi, 20 - 4 people it described as "terrorists". Their "terrorism" apparently consisted of writing with chalk on a sidewalk, wearing bandanas while protesting, and distributing flyers about animal research at UCSC. No, seriously.

SHAC London in the 'SOCPA' zone

25-02-2009 23:24

Monday, 23th February

Only three of us for another mini demo inside the 'SOCPA-zone' where we protested against Barclays (biggest HLS shareholder), but we still managed to do a decent little demo while leafletting about this Friday's march. We managed about 40 minutes of a demonstration before being told to clear off by a sergeant. It's a free society to demonstrate as long as you get permission and give 6 days notice! What a joke! Anyway, SHAC doesn't care about SOCPA and we'll be returning some time soon.

They even threatened to kill her if she made her story public.

NATO summit 2009: A democracy free zone

24-02-2009 12:45

When the alliance of democracies meets, there is no space for democracy on the streets

When NATO celebrates its 60th birthday in Baden-Baden, Kehl and Strasbourg on 3 and 4 April 2009, there will be a lot of nice speeches about the values of democracy, and the need to defend democracy against a multitude of threats. But while NATO might talk about democracy, democracy will be temporarily suspended in huge areas of Baden-Baden, Kehl and Strasbourg.
