23-08-2012 19:47The British media has played a venal role throughout the ongoing efforts to witch-hunt and silence WikiLeaks and Julian Assange. But it has plumbed new depths following the decision by Ecuador to grant his request for political asylum.
23-08-2012 18:01The British government's threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. David Cameron, the former PR man to a television industry huckster and arms salesman to sheikdoms, is well placed to dishonour international conventions that have protected Britons in places of upheaval. Just as Tony Blair's invasion of Iraq led directly to the acts of terrorismin London on 7 July 2005, so Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have compromised the safety of British representatives across the world.
This letter was sent to all members of Liam Fox MP's Constituency party, the North Somerset Conservative Association (NSCA) and was not reported by Northcliffe owned Bristol local paper The Post or their regional Western Daily Press. Hundreds of supporters of Julian Assange gathered outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for Julian's first public appearance since taking refuge there and seeking asylum in Ecuador exactly two months ago. Ecuador announced its decision to grant asylum on Thursday, but the British government is petulantly refusing to do what even the most repressive government would do in similar circumstances, namely grant Julian safe passage out of the country.
A year after the death of Kingsley Burrell no one has been charged and his body has still not been released to his grieving family for burial and a full inquest has yet to be held.
Nearest tube Knightsbridge. The Embassy is round the back of Harrods.
Julian Assange will give a public address to his supporters.
Solidarity and support are now needed more than ever.
