04-06-2007 08:17

Opposing spy base’s role in Iraq war
The Howard government and the security authorities have gone to extraordinary lengths to suppress any information emerging from the trial about the base or the associated operations of the intelligence agencies. Last year, a judge placed constraining orders on the defendants to prevent them from making any comments about ASIO’s surveillance activities.

So you thought that the Stasi had been disbanded?
So we’ve back at the hostel for around an hour and a half after the first trouble when the phone rings. ‘The cops are going fucking mad!’ we are told so it’s back to the rally to see what is going on? A car has been torched since we were last here and the water cannons are out.

JFK Four: Connecting Propaganda Dots from Jamaat al-Muslimeen to Hugo Chávez?

03-06-2007 19:45

Russell Defreitas, the elderly and hapless patsy ensnared by the FBI for the crime of dreaming up a fantastical plot to blow up Kennedy Airport, “may have been inspired by Osama bin Laden,” however “was not an al-Qaida wannabe, according to authorities.

According to the corporate media, Defreitas may prove to be a convenient link to Jamaat al-Muslimeen and Hugo Chávez, as the former is basically insignificant beyond the realm of kidnapping and drug smuggling, while the latter is a big fish with a lot of oil at his disposal and the neocons would love to demonize him as a terrorist, thus working toward his overthrow.

May Was a Bad Month for Democracy

03-06-2007 19:45

You might think that a month that (finally) saw the resignation of Tony Blair would be full of hopeful events but it seems like there's an unusually large number of reasons to be cheerless if you are a person who likes democracy and human rights.

The current counter-revolutionary offensive in Venezuela – what it means and ho

03-06-2007 16:47

The non-renewal of the broadcasting licence to private TV station RCTV in Venezuela has been used by the Venezuelan oligarchy and imperialism to unleash the coup-plotting campaign they were unable to launch at the time of the December 3rd elections.

Despite all the hue and cry over "freedom of expression" the real aim of the oligarchy in Venezuela is to create a situation of chaos, violence and confusion, and if they can, get someone killed in one of the demonstrations. This would allow them to create a favourable international climate and launch an open offensive against the Venezuelan revolution with a combination of the following methods: military coup, assassination of Chávez, imperialist intervention.

Police Repression of Antifa Demo in Schwerin

03-06-2007 14:13

Bin nazis poster outside Schwerin railway station
Saturday 2nd June

German Fascists called a demonstration on the same day as the major mobilisation against the G8 in Rostock. Antifa mobilised an anti-fascist response to the planned demo in Schwerin, north-west Germany.

Schwerin was eerily quite for a Saturday morning. German cops setup road blocks on the city's arterial roads in an attempt to filter out fascists and anti-fascists. The city's streets were deserted and the tram system was suspended. Posters showing a Nazi swasticka being chucked in a bin adorned roads around the city. There was little evidence of the "Master Race" mobilising in Schwerin but reports came in later that they had mobilised in Berlin and other parts of Germany. For the most part, local people we spoke to seemed confused about the nature of the counter demo, perhaps mirroring the somewhat confused interpretation of what really constitutes the radical left and right in Germany.

G8 Rostock Demo Rally Attacked by Police - Pics

02-06-2007 16:43

Just after half past two when the march from the station was entering the harbour a scuffle broke out at the far end of the stadium area near the exit. Several police officers were dragging a man away while people around where trying to find out his name. The situation quickly escalated as more police were sent in to back up the others arresting the man. People were pushed back and then some sticks thrown at the police who responded with pepper spray. A wave of about 50 police followed a few seconds later, charging towards the crowd and was met with a hail of sticks and stones.
