photo from kent news
Both the Army Romors Service website and a local paper in Kent are today reporting that a public 'apology' has been issued by the person who subvertised one of the Afghan Generation poppy appeal posters at Gillingham train station. According to the report on Kent News, the same billboard has been subvertised again, this time with the new message "SORRY. NEVER AGAIN...?"

March and Protest against Novartis in Horsham

02-11-2009 15:27

We were very pleased that approximately 70 people turned out for our demonstration and march against Novartis in Horsham on Saturday .

Up until 2pm the day before we were not even sure that the demonstration would be able to take place, as Novartis had attempted to get an interim injunction. Novartis were seeking to prevent banners on the demonstration from bearing the words "Novartis", or carry posters showing images of animal suffering. They didn't want protesters to be able to wear masks or costumes; in particular blood stained lab coats. They did also mention something about fireworks!

The Guardian on protest. Can we trust it?

02-11-2009 13:52

Schnews Graphic

"Funny that the Guardian is doing the police's work for them": Tweet

On the evening of Sunday October 25th, a number of activists were angry to discover that the Guardian had published the full DSEi 2005 spotter card on it's website. Next day it appeared on the front page of the print edition. The anger resulted from discussions that several of those featured had had with Guardian Journo Rob Evans, several weeks before, after they became aware that the Guardian had the card and was planning to run a story on it. They contacted Rob Evans and informed him that several people on the card did not want their images published. Several of those who were prepared to comment on the story made it clear that they were only prepared to do so, if the Guardian agreed to pixellate the pictures of those who did not wish to be involved.

As an article in The Register noted:

"According to sources within the activist community, many of them are hopping mad. Some of those who are still active feel that this is every bit as intrusive as the police action: others, who have not been active politically for many years, point out that displaying their pictures prominently in the national press, alongside copy that highlights the police description of such activists as "domestic extremists", could have serious implications for their jobs and livelihoods."

Death threats for journalists covering far right demos

02-11-2009 12:13

EDL in Leeds
Tough and urgent action is needed in response to violence, intimidation and death threats targeting journalists covering far right demonstrations.

The call by NUJ General Secretary Jeremy Dear comes in the wake of specific email threats against photojournalist and investigative reporter Marc Vallée, and video journalist Jason N. Parkinson.

The emails follow verbal threats and intimidation aimed at photographers covering a march by the English Defence League in Leeds at the weekend and other EDL protests this year.

Professional journalists covering the events have filed reports with the NUJ detailing physical violence, including one being punched in the head, verbal threats, and attempts to seize cameras and smash equipment. The union is to file complaints to the police.

Palestinian Child Prisoners - UK Meetings

02-11-2009 11:58

A national tour to highlight the systematic and institutionalised ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children by the Israeli authorities, organised by Action for Palestinian Children and supported by Palestine Solidarity Campaign

Mohammad Abu Eid, from the occupied West Bank, was 14 years old when he was detained by the Israeli forces in February 2008 and accused of throwing stones at the Wall. Mohammad was beaten, interrogated in the absence of a lawyer and family member, deceived into signing a confession, prosecuted in a military court and sentenced to four months imprisonment inside Israel. Whilst in prison, he received no education and no family visits.

Mohammad, in the company of his mother, Somaya, will share their experiences with the audience to foster a better understanding of the situation facing Palestinian children.

Leeds anti-EDL demo shows urgent need for Antifascist Defence League

02-11-2009 11:54

On Saturday 31 October the fascist English Defence League held another racist rally against Muslims with hundreds of EDL supporters causing havoc in the gay district of Leeds. They did so despite over a 1,000 anti-fascists holding a rally nearby – a clear majority of whom wanted to march against the EDL and stop their rally. So, what went wrong?
