Campaigners demand action about enriched uranium at Hinkley

25-01-2011 18:22

Chris Huhne, Secretary Of State for the Department of Environmental Calamities and Catastrophes visited Hinkley Point today (Monday 24th January) and also Bridgwater College who are currently destroying a green field to make way for a 'nuclear skills' facility.

The minister was interviewed by selected members of the press where he announced the apparent success of their reconsultation on the National Policy Statements, a classic case of the spin being a far cry from the reality. If the consultation was such a success then why was this ministerial visit such a hushed up affair? Could it have anything to do with the fact that there is a scandal breaking locally about the possibility that the land earmarked for development at Hinkley is already contaminated with Enriched Uranium? There was no mention of Huhne's visit locally, but a group of campaigners did find out about it and turned up at the college in the hope of talking about their concern that local authorities are failing to act, despite having a legal obligation to do so, but Mr Huhne had already scarpered.

Under the Environment Act 1995 local authorities have a duty to investigate any reasonable concern about contamination, the data that points to the contamination has been discovered by a local resident Cecily Collingridge, who was examining EDFs application for preliminary works, upon discovering the anomalies she took her findings to radiological expert Dr Chris Busby of Green Audit who confirmed her concerns, Dr Busby and Ms Collingridge have filed an FOI request with EdF about data that is apparently missing from the application. Ms Collingridge delivered a copy of their joint report about the contamination to West Somerset District council last week but so far they have failed to act.

Protest at Southwark Council against Cuts

25-01-2011 17:23

About 100 people gathered outside the Southwark Council Meeting this afternoon
to protest the planned Cuts. Speakers demanded from the Council to defend them
against the plans of the government to cut social services and education. They
also demanded to stop privatisation and stressed that outsourcing and improving
"efficiency" is not an answer to the problems.

Police tried to move people to a prepared area across several times and later
gave up doing so as people were obviously insisting of protesting directly in front
of the Council building.

Speakers also stressed the solidarity between local anti cuts groups and the continuing
struggles of students against cuts in education and mobilised for the demonstration
next Saturday (29th January) and the upcoming Lewisham Carnival against the Cuts (19th Feb)

A number of people was later allowed by police to go inside and attend the Council meeting.

Careers Group defends inclusion of arms company BAE Systems in careers events

25-01-2011 11:54

Protesters unite under the Ban BAE banner
The Careers Group (University of London) organises the Guardian Graduate Fair which last November exhibited numerous companies including BAE Systems (the worlds largest weapons producer. Students and campaigners protested in front of the BAE stall and at their presentation and an open letter signed by student representatives was presented to the Careers Group and The Guardian asking for the company to be excluded from future events. (To read open letter see  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2010/12/470099.html). We have received a vague response from the Careers Group defending the inclusion of the arms company at the event and we have responded with another letter, both of which are available to read here.

Barclays Shut All Day After Lively Protest.

25-01-2011 11:22

Protestors clashed with police and security guards during a picket of banks in Broadmead and Cabot Circus.

About 80 people, many wearing guy fawkes masks and others dressed as clowns, joined the rolling demonstration to highlight the banks’ involvement in the arms trade. They gathered in Castle Park before marching down Union Street and into Broadmead, at first followed by two patrolling police officers.

But police reinforcements were brought in, together with security guards, after the protesters got into their first target, Barclays in Broadmead. Barclays were targetted as the have been before for there involvement in weapons that are illegal by international law, including depleted uranium, cluster munitions and Israeli F16 bomb release mechanisms.

The incident became heated when efforts were made to push the demonstrators out of the bank and force the doors shut, leading to some scuffles. Barclays chose to shut for the rest of the day.

on the moveOnce they had been ejected, the protesters moved on to the nearby Lloyds TSB premises, where police and security staff were already waiting for them, lined up across the door.

Opposite was NatWest, another target for more chanting and messages left chalked on the pavement. The slogans referred to bankers’ bonuses as well as the arms trade. As the police helicopter hovered overhead and bemused shoppers looked on, the gathering then headed into Cabot Circus. For a time they switched their attention to Vodafone – one of the companies accused of tax avoidance – where several protesters ended up on the floor blocking the doorway. HSBC was the final target before the group, by then breaking up, headed back to safer ground near stokes croft. No arrest’s were made.closed

SHIFT MAGAZINE: From the Defence of the Present to the Control of the Future

25-01-2011 11:03

The recent student unrest has massively expanded political possibilities in the UK and Europe. The game is afoot and the next move is to generalise the struggle beyond the education sector. For many an ‘anti-cuts’ message is the way to do this. There is a danger, however, that the logic of this position contains the mechanism of its own failure. We urgently need to foment a shift away from a politics that defends our own powerlessness, to one where we can become the collective authors of our own histories.
