In the wake of the Afghan Election: NATO Intensifies Military Deployments, Carna

07-09-2009 09:10

In Afghanistan, the U.S. is waging its longest war since that in Vietnam and NATO is fighting its first ground war.

Not, never, willing to acknowledge that the Afghan war is in fact a war, Washington and Brussels from the NATO summit in April until now have attempted to justify their troop buildups in South Asia as motivated primarily by insuring that the second presidential election in Afghanistan since the joint U.S.-NATO invasion of 2001 proceeded uninterrupted. A ruthless counterinsurgency and bombing campaign was thus portrayed as another war for democracy.

And The Trees Are Down At The Venice Film Festival!

06-09-2009 22:23

Venice, September 6 - After sixty-six years the Venice Film Festival has lost its pine grove and much of its charm, but fortunately not the social bite of film-makers who have something to say. Their messages this year were often grim reflecting the dark, corrupt, doomed side of a society where the protagonists no longer walk off into the sunset but live on a planet environmentalists believe is dying while government stooges diagnose its economy is on the mend.

Policing at climate camp

06-09-2009 21:47

Ian Caswell, one of the few regular FIT cops to make an appearance at camp
Climate camp was something of a surreal experience after the aggressive policing and constant stop and searches of previous camps. There can be no denying that the public order cops were on the back foot, unable to do anything but smile and facilitate the camp, no matter what sort of provocation came their way. Even a mass outing to Canary Wharf on Friday did nothing to dampen their spirit of ‘facilitation’, and they left the ‘robust policing’ to the hoards of private security in grey suits.

Chiapas News August/September 2009

06-09-2009 18:00

Twenty of the paramilitaries who were among the material authors of the Acteal Massacre in 1997 were released from prison on 12th August, and the cases of 37 more are under review. A week later, documents were declassified which prove that the Mexican government and its army authorized the paramilitary activity in Chiapas which led to the massacre. The Acteal massacre was, therefore, un Crimen de Estado (a state crime) perpetrated by the government of President Ernesto Zedillo. The message sent, that of impunity for atrocity, has encouraged the growing presence of armed paramilitary groups already active in the area. The men are members of the Army of God, an evangelical group. Violence is increasing and tension is high.
