Shops boarded up (pic)
It was probably less the (non-existent) threat of violence by protesters than the massively over-hyped announcements by the police and the mainstream media about Mayday riots that caused many shop owners on Oxford Street to board up their shops. At least half the shops on Oxford Street were boarded up.

Police criticised (pic)
The heavy-handed approach by police on Mayday made people more and more angry as the day went on. After almost 2 hours of party at Elephant and Castle, the crowd moved off the square to join other groups in central London.
