Wildcat Strike at Risley Prison

Prison officers at Risley Prison in Warrington and at two prisons in Lancaster took part in wildcat strikes today in solidarity with staff in Liverpool, who walked out on Tuesday. The strike by hundreds of officers forced the governor of HMP Liverpool to bow to the pressure and agree to talks with the Prison Officers’ Association (POA).

The goal of the event is to provide an opportunity for groups who are already working on issues related to imprisonment – whether it be poverty, policing, criminalization, deaths in custody, violence, drug policy, mental health, racial profiling, immigration detention, sex work or other issues -- to share information, offer mutual support and collectively strategize around how to stop prison expansion in Britain.

Students thrown off English course at Manchester College

Up to 300 students have been thrown off the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course at Manchester College. The college says this is because of “an unforeseen error in ESOL enrolment” and changes in government funding.

Two jailed for contempt of court in USA

Two people, Carrie Feldman and Scott DeMuth have been jailed for refusing to testify in front of a grand jury in Iowa, USA. The two were found to be in contempt of court this Tuesday. Both will be held until they agree to testify or for the duration of the grand jury (another 11 months). By law the longest they could be held is 18 months.

The actions were a part of the European days against fascism, which were announced by the antifascist conference organized by Siempre Antifascista.

The intruders were spotted walking through the front door of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre at around 8.30am this morning.
