Photographers 6 year legal battle concludes.

19-11-2009 15:33

Photo taken by Swiss doctor after emergency surgery in 2003.
Tomorrow (Friday 20th) a court in Lausanne Switzerland will hear an appeal by photographer Guy Smallman who was crippled by a deliberately targeted Police Stun Grenade during the G8 protests in 2003. Mr Smallman previously won his case but the State of Geneva successfully appealed the first ruling. The Swiss Federal Court will hear arguments from both sides tomorrow morning and makes its decision in the same session. If Mr Smallman wins then he will qualify for compensation for his injuries. If he loses then he will owe thousands in legal costs to the State of Geneva.

He has been supported in his fight by both UK Indymedia and the National Union of Journalists over the past six years.

Corporate Watch: NDET issues bail conditions designed to prevent protest

19-11-2009 11:39

Following two house raids in Evesham and Gosport in the early hours of Tuesday 10th November, four animal rights activists were arrested, charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and given wide-ranging bail conditions designed specifically to prevent their participation in any facet of animal rights campaigning. The charges are based upon the seizure of a solitary piece of 'evidence' in a raid a year earlier.

The raids commenced at 7am when police wearing balaclavas, including members of the National Domestic Extremism Team (NDET), raided two houses. At one address masked police scaled the walls and broke windows, instead of knocking on the door, to gain entry. At the other, 20-30 police burst in brandishing fire extinguishers. From these two raids four people were arrested and later charged with conspiracy to cause criminal damage. The arresting officer was DC Mace, of the NDET London, and the accusations relate to several minor acts of criminal damage in the south of England, claimed by anonymous animal rights activists.

PRESS RELEASE

Anti-War Activists Disrupt NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Edinburgh

Trident Ploughshares Press Release 17 November, 2009 - For immediate release

Just after eight thirty this morning, several members of Trident Ploughshares blocked the entrance of the Edinburgh International Conference Center for quarter of an hour as Parliamentarians from NATO countries met for the final session of the assembly. Foreign Secretary David Milliband and the Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen were due to speak following a minute’s silence. The protesters wore shirts emblazoned with the images of wounded and traumatized Afghan children, graphically demonstrating the fact that NATO’s war in Afghanistan is killing innocent civilians and traumatizing children in violation of international law. They recited the names of Afghan civilians who have died since the war began. Several protesters were blocking the entrance to the Conference Centre so that Parliamentarians could see them on their way into the session or from the escalators inside the building. Police arrested six of them.

Identifying Threat: New biometrics markets and terror culture

19-11-2009 01:16

The culture of fear and distrust that has grown up around this century’s terror culture and its associated wars has created vast new markets for anything that can be branded with the words security or defence. In April 2010, London’s Kensington Olympia will play host to a Counter Terror Expo, put on by DSEi’s infamous events’ organiser, Clarion, and sponsored by French arms company, Thales. Officially supported by a plethora of military, police and private security associations, the expo will showcase over 250 security, surveillance and specialist logistics companies; state agencies including NATO and the MoD; and anyone else claiming to provide protection against terrorism for both the armed forces and civilian populations. Joining the fray are a number of corporations involved in creating identity verification technologies. The biometrics and database management companies whose invasive products, based on the recognition of physiological characteristics, are finding voice as futuristic 'solutions' in, what is deemed, an 'increasingly dangerous world'.

The Basildon District Council cabinet is meeting on 10th December to decide which of two undisclosed bailiff companies it will use to forcibly evict travellers living on Britain's biggest traveller site, the renowned Dale Farm in Essex.
