EYEWITNESS: Sharia and the stoning to death of a Saudi woman

08-08-2003 23:45

When I was sent to Riyadh for a month to work with the US Air Force for a joint assignment, I never realized the sights I'd see. One of them was a public stoning. All I saw was a woman standing in a hole tied to a post, she was shoulder deep in the hole. The guy I was with wanted to see it. It's rare that westerners are even allowed to see this. They gathered around this poor girl for around an hour, throwing rocks at her.

Philippines: 300 troops mutiny unmasks “war on terror”

08-08-2003 14:53

As the State of the Nation Address of the President was heading towards its date, a group of 296 soldiers - 70 junior officers and 226 enlisted men of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)- staged on July 27 the siege of the Oakwood Premier luxury hotel at the Ayala Center, in Makati financial district of Metro Manila. Based on their own statements as the people heard it on tv and radios, they were asking the entire administration to resign. The rebels had accused Ms Macapagal and Defense Secretary Reyes of corruption and sponsoring terrorist bombings in Mindanao. They also complained of low pay and inadequate housing of the troops. It is a public, spectacular and clear accusation of corruption against the bourgeois state system and its “war on terror”.
