09-07-2010 12:23This is interesting given the frequent attempt by some to portray the EDL as a benign force detached from the rest of the fascist and nazi movement in England. The massed ranks of the Aryan Strike Force (ASF) and the British Freedom Force (BFF) have suffered a body blow as Mike Heaton and Trevor Hannington [...]
09-07-2010 11:21The Conservative-Liberal Democrat government is to implement legislation slashing the redundancy pay of civil servants by as much as 85 percent. The aim is to pave the way for the 600,000 public sector job losses required by its savage cuts package to government departments of between 25 and 40 percent in the next four years.
09-07-2010 09:22“Hussain Must Stay! “
“Stop The War – Troops Out Of Afghanistan Now”
Date: Wednesday 21st July
Venue: Easton Community Centre, Kilburn Street, Bristol BS5 6AW
Speakers: Hussain Ali, Carol Turner (Stop The War Coalition), Glen Burrows (Bristol RMT – personal capacity)
Hussain Ali came to Britain aged 14 after all his family were killed in Afghanistan. He is now 17 and is threatened with deportation back to Afghanistan because our government has decided it is a 'safe place'. But Afghans and British soldiers die there every day. British soldiers are being withdrawn from the area of the country where casualties have been highest in recent months. The entire US and British strategy for the war is being called into question.
Hear Hussain tell his story and others explain how and why Afghanistan is not a 'safe place'.
This meeting is part of the campaign to raise funds for Hussain's appeal.

09-07-2010 08:13At a stroke the Academies Bill could take hundreds of the most successful schools out of local authority control. This would leave local authorities managing the schools with the most difficulties, with diminishing budgets.
In reality this means the end of the state education system as we know it.
In every city and town we need to start to resist these proposals.
No privatisation, No cuts: Defend State Education.

Five years on from the London tube bombings, we remain no closer to a full, complete and impartial understanding of the terrible events of that day. Today, the coalition government has demonstrated that it has largely fallen in line with the steps of its predecessor.

Robert Fisk wrote last week in the Independent of how an unnamed friend of his, "a Very Senior Correspondent of the BBC", responded to a recent challenge. Fisk could no longer recall whether it "was about the BBC's grovelling coverage of Israel or its refusal to show a film seeking help for wounded Palestinian children after the 2008-09 Gaza slaughter (on the grounds that this would damage the BBC's 'neutrality')". But the BBC correspondent was blandly dismissive:
"I recognise this is an issue."

Photo and video material from the Israeli attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla expose the use of European and US produced war material. The attack on the relief boats was executed by Israeli navy special forces Unit 13 (Shayetet 13). Several large and small navy ships, as well as helicopters, were used, armed with US and European weapons.
Involved in the attack was a Sa'ar V corvette named Lahav built by US company Northrop-Grumman. The Sa'ar V is fitted with mostly US and Israeli weapon systems, but according to Jane's Fighting Ships it has an Italian OTO Melara 76mm canon, which is interchangeable with a Swedish Bofors 57 mm canon. The OTO Melara canon were also used for bombarding the coast of Gaza during the January 2009 war.
Other weapon systems on the Sa'ar V are surface-surface missiles (SSM) from McDonnell Douglas, and Barak surface-air missiles (SAM) from Israeli Industries. It also has US-made Honeywell torpedoes. Command systems and weapon control are from Elbit and ElOp respectively, both Israeli companies.
No names of the other big ships involved are known but there was at least one Sa’ar 4.5 class involved. Ships of this class are armed– amongst other weapons – with 2 Austrian Oerlikon 20mm guns
