Jonathan Kazembe is Here to Stay
Immigration: Detention of Children
My Lords, I am grateful to the Minister for that reply, and I welcome her to her new high ministerial office and wish her well for the future. When does she expect to be able to end child detention for immigration purposes? Does she not agree that it would be a signal success for the new Government if there could be an early announcement that ended the practice? Is there any chance of her being able to do that sensibly before the House rises for the Summer Recess?

America Kills Peace

03-06-2010 18:23

Nothing scares the United States more than the possibility that peace might break out. Turkey and Brazil committed an unforgiveable sin, by finding a way to resolve questions about Iran’s nuclear fuel stocks. The U.S. pushed the agreement aside, preferring to move closer to war – as if that is Washington’s desired result.

The president of the United States claims the right to interfere in relations between sovereign nations, target his own citizens for death and hold anyone prisoner indefinitely. This is the description of a nation that is for all intents and purposes at war with the rest of humanity.

high court banner drop

03-06-2010 17:22

after the democracy village eviction hearing was adjourned this afternoon at the high court, 3 protestors scaled the building and dropped banners 100 feet above the strand. police are in attendance.

the banners call for peace in afghanistan, no more war, and respect for soldiers but not for war.

the hearing itself was adjourned for further legal arguments and will continue on monday, with a probable direction for a full hearing the following friday.

with the possibility of appeals running to weeks, it looks as though the democracy village can grow from strength to strength in the meantime.

although the village is an umbrella of various protest groups and agendas, the strongest single issue and message seems to be about afghanistan, and with the majority of the british public behind the withdrawal of soldiers from this unsustainable war, it looks as though the democracy village and people's assembly outside parliament on the grass is a better representation of the british population than the corrupt, horse-trade coalition that has seized power inside parliament.

there were more than fifty supporters at the high court today and their presence was very powerful, so villagers are calling for even more support on monday morning.

Deportation travel agents awarded 'deportation profiteer of the year' title

03-06-2010 16:42

Carlson Wagonlit Travel award
A travel agents contracted by the UK Border Agency to arrange the forcible deportation of migrants has been awarded the title of 'Deportation Profiteer of the Year'. [1]

Campaigners from the Stop Deportation Network today presented Carlson Wagonlit Travel with the award at its main offices in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. [2]

In April 2010, CWT won a government contract to book seats on scheduled and chartered flights for immigration detainees due for deportation. The global booking agency, which specialises in business travel management, has been used by the UKBA to do what campaigners described as a "dirty business" since 2004. In the financial year 2004-5, the contract was worth almost £23million. [3]

Forget Tesco - lets have people-powered supermarkets...

03-06-2010 16:22

This is a great idea: people-powered supermarkets. It's a co-op owned by the members - when you join you agree to help out in the shop - and as such the prices can be lower 'cos we're all helping out. So lets have this in Stokes Croft and not another boring dull Tesco.
Have a look:

The concept comes from the United States and from New York’s Park Slope Food Co-op in particular. And the idea, which has been around for four decades in the US, is also a simple one; people can benefit from reductions in their shopping bill if they give some of their time to work in the co-operative’s shop.

At The People’s Supermarket, a not-for-profit venture, members are asked to work four hours a month and in return can expect savings of at least ten per cent on their shopping, compared to non members.

Arthur admits that transferring a successful model from the United States does not guarantee success: “Americans tend to be much more group-based. They’re very much into solidarity — ‘We’re the United States!’

“It remains to be seen whether the British are prepared to come together in the same way, but I think members of communities are starting to look to each other for strength and support and sharing skills.”

And Arthur believes that the current economic climate works in favour of his new venture: “It’s giving people the opportunity to take control of their own situation by giving their own time to save money, so it’s a very good way to take control of how we buy food.”

And this is Arthur’s main motivation and something he clearly feels passionate about: “Supermarkets control how we buy food and what we eat and they make an absolute fortune from us. I want this to be a real wake up call for people to see what supermarkets are doing to them and to show that there is an alternative model.

“Supermarkets are making massive demands for profit to satisfy their shareholders and that’s very destructive for the world economy. They are flying cheap products across the world while British producers struggle to get their products into British shops. I speak to a lot of local producers and they are having a really tough time in all sorts of ways. I hope The People’s Supermarket will act as a conduit between producers and consumers.”

Protest Against Israel's Attack On Aid Flotilla [1]

03-06-2010 15:22

Join the protest against Israel's attack on the aid flotilla - 3pm Saturday 5th June on the Centre (opposite Hippodrome)
There has been an unprecedented explosion of anger against Israel's deadly attack on the Gaza aid flotilla, reflected in protests across the country and throughout the world.

People who went in peace to take aid to Gaza have been subjected to violent attack. Nine were killed. Hundreds have been locked up in Israeli prisons. Their possessions have been confiscated.

Two of the activists on the flotilla, Cliff Hanley & Sakir Yildirim, are from Bristol. They are now travelling home after their ordeal.

Israel and the US have never been so isolated over the issue of Gaza. NATO had a crisis meeting today, one of its members being Turkey, from where most of those killed on the flotilla came.

Nick Clegg said today that he wants the Gaza siege lifted, adding that David Cameron agrees with him!

But words are easy. We need urgent action and that means exerting maximum public pressure on political leaders who have indulged Israeli crimes against humanity for so long.

On Saturday 5th June there will be a protest in Bristol calling for a full independent inquiry into the attack and a permanent end to the blockade of Gaza. Please join us – assemble on The Centre (opposite the Hippodrome) at 3pm. We hope Cliff and Sakir will be able to speak there. Bring placards, friends & family.
