Sheffield to Import Waste?

03-01-2011 20:45

It's always interesting when councils and their major contractors run public consultations nicely placed over the Christmas period, as if to catch the public unaware of a deadline for responses on, let's say, 15th January. This is the case with the proposal to ship in up to 50,000 tonnes of waste for Bernard Road Incinerator. It would come from surrounding towns and counties, by heavy lorries presumably. That's not likely to be controversial is it?

Student Activists Plan Big Things For The New Year.

03-01-2011 16:22

On Friday 17th December, student protestors at the University of West England (UWE) chose to end their occupation against education cuts after 26 days for the Christmas break, vowing to continue & escalate the fight back. On Friday 17th December, student protestors at the University of West England (UWE) chose to end their occupation against education cuts after 26 days for the Christmas break, vowing to continue & escalate the fight back. For almost a month student activists occupied a section of the Frenchay campus in protest at the proposed rise in tuition fees and education cuts. The students used the space as a hub for building national and local demonstrations as well as teach-ins, film screenings and live gigs.

The UWE protest (initially inspired by the student protests at Tory HQ) was the longest running in a wave of student occupations, which jointly with massive marches and civil disobedience have rocked this country over the last 6 weeks. The ‘Camp for education’ received an unprecedented level of support from students at the university and from a large solidarity campaign from trade unions, community organisations and activists across the region.

In the wake of the parliamentary vote, students may be expected to retreat but this betrayal by their parliamentary representatives has only served to pour fuel onto the fire. In France massive education cuts were never implemented despite passing parliamentary votes due to a massive protest movement which struck the country. It is vital that we do the same in this country.

The UWE activists have vowed to escalate their protests with the start of the new term with further demonstrations, stunts, meetings and teach- ins. Indeed since coming out of occupation UWE activists have attended a demonstration against corporate tax evasion and enacted a banner drop from Clifton Suspension Bridge with the slogan “People of Europe join the movement, Make the bankers pay!”

With the new term comes new opportunities to fight back against the proposed retraction in the provision of education in our society and the intended reduction in social mobility that could follow. With a mass movement this energetic and creative this represents not just the first crack in the Con-Dem coalition but quite possibly its grave diggers.

WIKILEAKS: Israel has 100 bunkerbusters

03-01-2011 12:58

In the autumn of 2009, American and Israeli leaders agreed that they should keep secret the delivery of bombs that can destroy Iranian nuclear facilities. In November 2009, a high-level group of Americans and Israelis met in Tel Aviv. On the agenda was the political and military situation in the Middle East. Concern about Iran's nuclear program dominated both the American and Israeli delegation, according to a document that Aftenposten has accessed via Wikileaks. The document states that the Israeli government considers 2010 a critical year, provided that the Iranians continued to increase the defense of the nuclear facilities. -Both sides then discussed the upcoming delivery of GBU-28 "bunker-busters" to Israel. A point was made that deliveries should take place in secret so that allegations that the U.S. government was helping Israel to prepare for an attack on Iran, "could be avoided, according to the document.

Hundreds of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv Saturday night to protest the death of Bil’in resident Jawaher Abu Rahmah, who died on Saturday morning after inhaling tear gas fired by Israeli forces during the weekly anti-fence demonstration.

The 36 year-old woman was evacuated to a Ramallah hospital on Friday afternoon, after losing consciousness. Doctors attached her to a respirator and treated her for exposure to toxins found in the tear gas, but the patient did not respond. She died at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning, without regaining consciousness.

Truro students to march in defence of the EMA

02-01-2011 19:22

11th of January - march to County Hall in Truro to fight against the abolition of the EMA scheme. Meet at McDonald's car-park (near the college) at 12:15 and march down to County Hall.
Students and activists in Truro will protest on the 11th of January against the abolition of the Education Maintenance Allowance, which benefits thousands of young people in Cornwall. Since EMAs are provided by local councils, we will be marching from the college to County Hall in defence of the up to £30 a week payment which is targeted at students from deprived and lower-income backgrounds.

The demonstration will begin at around 12:15, with campaigners congregating in McDonald's car-park. Local media and supporters are urged to come, as well as students from Truro College and other sixth forms and schools in the city.

The scrapping of the EMA scheme will make it significantly more difficult for many young people to continue with further education and then go on to higher education, meaning university education will once more become inaccessible to working class students. This effect is intensified when the tripling of tuition fees is taken into account. It is clear that the Tory-led coalition is intent on making it as difficult as possible for those who aren't wealthy to stay on and study after school.

EMAs have increased further education attendance, helping cover the cost of transport, books and resources for over 600,000 post-16 year olds. It is vital that we defend the scheme, brought in by Labour only seven or so years ago, and the demonstration hopes to pressure both Cornwall Council and central government to keep providing it. We do have the money to keep the EMA - the richest thousand in the UK last year increased their wealth by £77bn, and bankers took in £7bn in bonuses this Christmas. An increase in taxation upon that wealth could cover continuing the EMA scheme and abolish tuition fees.

RSVP via the Facebook event page - http://tinyurl.com/3yx2kf6

Bring placards, banners, and friends!

-------------------------------------------------------

Those who do not wish to march from near Truro College to County Hall can meet us there - it is expected that we will arrive at County Hall at around 1pm.
