Cuts campaigners @ HSBC Vodafone Virgin & the rest

10-07-2011 16:55

Saturday 9th July 2011

Anti-Cuts campaigners keep up the pressure on HSBC, Vodafone, Virgin Media, Boots and the rest .......

People had earlier occupied the HSBC Bank in Clumber Street, Nottingham for 2 hours by Notts Uncutters. This was part of the day of action to save the NHS called for by Notts SOS. The protest targeted HSBC for its involvement in PFI contracts that drain tens of millions of pounds from the health system. Also, due to its offshore tax arrangements, HSBC only pays a tiny fraction of its profits in tax.

As part of NHS action day, all the usual tax evanding companies were visited.  Leaflets handed out, speeches made. At the same time

At 12noon, Campaigners held a rally at Speakers' Corner, Market Square, where Secretary of State Andrew Lansley was 'put on trial' for his role in promoting the Health and Social Care Bill, which campaigners fear will open the door to the privatisation of the NHS.

NHS Campaigners hang Andrew Lansley for his crimes

Nottinghamshire Save Our Service (Notts SOS) protested outside Virgin Media on Clumber Street, Nottingham today (Saturday July 9th) against governments plans to open the NHS up to private companies.

The protest at Virgin followed a rally at Speakers' Corner, Market Square, where Secretary of State Andrew Lansley was 'put on trial' for his role in promoting the Health and Social Care Bill, which campaigners fear will open the door to the privatisation of the NHS.

Virgin Media was targeted because of a report which revealed that Assura Medical, part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group was particularly well positioned to benefit from the Bill.

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) reported in June that 10% of board members of the 52 'pathfinder' GP consortia, were directors of private healthcare providers. More than 60% of those with private links were associated with Assura Medical.

Rosemary Muge from Notts SOS said, "They are now desperately spinning to build support for the Health Bill. But make no mistake, the fact that Andrew Lansley says his main intentions are still intact means that even with these alterations they are leaving the way open for private companies to take over and make profits from sickness."

Harry Powell from the campaign said, "There has been widespread anger about the plans contained in the Health and Social Care Bill. Until now much of it has been directed against the architects of the Bill: Lansley, Cameron and Clegg. But those companies looking to profit from the destruction of the NHS need to realise that they are not immune from protest."

Notes for editors

Notts SOS was launched on 29th September 2010. They oppose cuts to services, job losses and cuts in benefits and aim to support workers organisations, service users, community groups in fighting cuts in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire. They hope to inspire confidence to think, meet and act. And to be inspired.

NHS Campaigners hang Andrew Lansley for his crimes

Campaigners held a rally at Speakers' Corner, Market Square, where Secretary of State Andrew Lansley was 'put on trial' for his role in promoting the Health and Social Care Bill, which campaigners fear will open the door to the privatisation of the NHS.

The case was put, councel prosecuted and a defence was heard. The crowd [jury] were not convinced and Mr Lanslet was hung by the jibbet, erected in the square.

Rosemary Muge from Notts SOS said, "They are now desperately spinning to build support for the Health Bill. Shenanigans of Amber Valley BNP

10-07-2011 13:55

There's been some queer goings on of late within Amber Valley BNP. Councillor Cliff Roper resigned the party whip in disgust at Griffin only to displace Councillor Lewis Allsebrook as party leader a week later. Is he really making a principled stand or is he just manouvering for power?

Cliff resigned on 15th June claiming that the move " is a symbolic protest at recent events within the British National Party, both at a national and local level." Infighting between Roper and Allsebrook has been going on for a while and has been fuelled by claims by other party members that Emma Roper, his wife, was having an affair with Allsebrook. There has also been speculation that Allsebrook was thinking of defecting to the Tories and wasn't considered to be right wing enough for Roper and that Allsebrook wasn't pulling his weight in the local party.

In the following week it seems lots of backroom deals were made and Roper ended up not only going back to the party but being promoted to leader of the BNP group, displacing Allsebrook in the process. So much for the "symbolic protest"!

We look forward to more infighting and disintegration in the future :)

Anti-Privatisation Campaigners Protest Virgin

09-07-2011 16:55

Campaigners from Nottinghamshire Save Our Service (Notts SOS) protested outside Virgin Media on Clumber Street, Nottingham today (Saturday July 9th) against governments plans to open the NHS up to private companies.

The protest at Virgin followed a rally at Speakers' Corner, Market Square, where Secretary of State Andrew Lansley was 'put on trial' for his role in promoting the Health and Social Care Bill, which campaigners fear will open the door to the privatisation of the NHS.

Virgin: Hands Off Our NHS!

09-07-2011 16:55

Text of a leaflet handed out, by campaigners outside Virgin Media on Clumber Street as part of the Save Our NHS Day of Action.

The Government's plans for the NHS have been widely criticised by healthcare professionals, campaigners and even the LibDem spring conference. However, not everybody is opposed to the governments plans to open the NHS up to private companies. Indeed some people stand to do very well out of the plans Chief among them is Richard Branson's Virgin Group.

An investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism in June (http://tinyurl.com/6jpqg9c) revealed that 10% of board members of the 52 "pathfinder" GP consortia, were also directors of private healthcare providers. More than 60% of those with private links were associated with a company called Assura Medical, which is 75% owned by Virgin Healthcare, part of the Virgin Group.

Virgin are by no means the only company likely to do well out of the governments plans for the NHS, but they are particularly well-placed to capitalise on the impacts of the Health and Social Care Bill which will open much of the NHS up to the private sector.

This isn't Virgin's first attempt to get chummy with GPs in order to promote private interference in the NHS. IN 2008, Virgin Healthcare announced plans to open healthcare centres across the UK. A tour was organised to promote the ventures, but was dogged by protests (including one in Nottingham in front of the Castle).

Given their role in the privatised rail network do we want Virgin to get their greedy mitts on our health service? Unless we act now to stop the Health and Social Care Bill currently making its way through Parliament this may very well be what happens.

HSBC occupied to save the NHS

09-07-2011 13:55

The Clumber Street branch of HSBC in Nottingham was occupied for 2 hours this morning by Notts Uncutters.

Protesters held placards, handed out leaflets about the day of action and got a generally positive response from members of the public. HSBC managers looked decidedly nervous, although the protest was good natured. Eventually the branch manager, accompanied by two police officers, arrived to claim that the protest was 'harassing' his customers and the police subsequently threatened to arrest people for aggravated trespass. The protesters decided to continue the protest outside. Amusingly a copper was sat outside in his car avidly reading one of the Notts Uncut newsletters!

UG#558 - Into Eternity (Understanding The Ongoing Nuclear Wars)

Audio
Did you know that the nuclear fallout in Fallujah is worse than in Hiroshima or Nagasaki? Brian Haw did. We start with a few words from the recently departed one man political protest. Then Chris Busby speaks on the dangers of radiation that authorities and the media conspire to cover up, and we hear from Jeff Donn about the real risks and radiation releases in US nuclear power stations. Our title feature, in hour 2, is a radio adaptation of the sombre and philosophical film, Into Eternity, about the Finnish efforts to build the world's first long term nuclear storage facility.
