Why Workers And Union Bosses Are Enemies

03-03-2011 15:08

Governor Walker's proposals have triggered wildcat strikes
The ongoing dispute over pay and bargaining rights in Wisconsin perfectly illustrates a major theme of my blog: the need for working people to establish organisations which are independent of the corporate unions. I've devoted an article to examining exactly why workers and union bosses are enemies before, but as the economic crisis sharpens, so do the contradictions, so it's worth a re-visit.

Libya evacuations: Africans ‘left out’

03-03-2011 12:28

Refugees flee Libya
Africans ‘left out’ in Libya evacuations ....... In the rush to rescue foreigners from Libya, thousands of migrant Africans are being left behind, holed up at home terrified as insurgents mistake them for mercenaries fighting for Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. Rumours that Gaddafi has hired fighters from south of the Sahara to quash a popular revolt against him have made hordes of Africans targets of popular anger, many from poor countries unable to organise their evacuation.

Death Penalty for Bradley Manning, the Alleged #WikiLeaks Whistleblower?

03-03-2011 10:59

Bradley Manning

Alleged WikiLeaks source Pfc. Bradley Manning, who has been in US custody since last May, after he reportedly told a former hacker that he had passed thousands of classified US military documents and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, had 22 new charges filed against him on Tuesday by the US Army, including a capital offense — “aiding the enemy” — for which the government has said it will not seek the death penalty, although, as Wired explained, “under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the presiding judge ultimately decides what charges to refer to court-martial and whether to impose the death penalty.”

Tyranny And Rebellion – The Breaking Of The Corporate Media Monopoly

03-03-2011 09:51

Historian Howard Zinn (1922-2010), would be remembered above all for his humanity and warmth, were it not for the crystal clarity of his insight. In 'A Power That Governments Can’t Suppress,' he wrote:

‘There is a tendency to think that what we see in the present moment will continue. We forget how often we have been astonished by the sudden crumbling of institutions, by extraordinary changes in people's thoughts, by unexpected eruptions of rebellion against tyrannies, by the quick collapse of systems of power that seemed invincible.’ (Zinn, A Power That Governments Can’t Suppress, City Lights, 2007, p.267)

Pics: #Hackney Against #Cuts - Town Hall Demo

02-03-2011 22:22

Around 300 people gathered to protest outside Hackney town hall as the councillors met to vote on millions of pounds of cuts. The town hall front entrance was ringed with three layers of crash barriers with police deployed with riot shields at the doors.

There was about an hour of speeches from local anti-cuts campaign groups, trade unions groups and local community groups as well as a performance of a special anti-cuts rnb style song. Around the corner people stood in a queue to be searched before being let inside to the public gallery (no food, or drinks, or other items were allowed inside).

Chanting "Whose Town Hall? Our Town Hall!" the crowd began marching around the back of the town hall, and banging and kicking the doors as police intervened to protect the doors. Next up people took the road to blockade it for an hour, as police looked on.

Meanwhile inside the meeting 40-50 people in the public gallery made their views heard, condemning the cuts -  at one point the meeting was suspended due to the heckling from the gallery.

The council passed the cuts at around 9.45pm

When an East Wind Scourges Occidentalist Arrogance

No Cuts in Nottingham!

02-03-2011 19:25

Nottingham City Council are planning to cut tens of millions from their spending in the year from April 2011. They will meet to set this budget on Monday March 7th. Notts Save Our Services (SOS) are calling on them not to adopt their cuts budget.

Actions:

On the newswire: Unison anti-cuts public protest | Call a Councillor | Stop Nottingham City budget cuts!

Protests elsewhere: Camden | Haringey | Hull | Islington | Lambeth | Leeds | Southampton

These cuts will reduce services and support for vulnerable people such as:

  • Sick, disabled and old people needing support
  • People who need help because of mental illness, drink and drugs misuse
  • Women fleeing domestic violence and children at risk

In addition there are to be cuts in leisure and cultural facilities such as public libraries. Also 368 Council employees are scheduled to lose their jobs. Further cuts to public services in coming years are planned.

Notts Save Our Services, the local anti-cuts campaign, are urging Nottingham City Councillors not to adopt their cuts budget when they meet on 7th March. They should:

  • Declare that the financial situation of the Council is an emergency
  • Work with relevant organisations in the City to draw up a budget based on the real needs of local people
  • Demand that the Government return the £60 million it has chopped from Nottingham City’s allocation

Sign the petition to the Council urging them to resist bringing in cuts to public services. You can also collect signatures yourself (using the downloadable petition) and get them to us before March 7th.

Tell them “No” to cuts!

It was the reckless folly of speculative bankers that in 2008 necessitated a £86 billion government bail-out of big banks to prevent them failing. Now the Coalition Government want us to foot the bill for propping up their rich banker friends. That is why the Government is imposing public spending cuts, especially on local councils. Notts SOS says that ordinary people should not pay the debts of the billionaire bankers.

What You Can Do

  • Sign the petition to Nottingham City Council. If you want to collect petitions use the downloadable version and contact us to return them when complete, before 7th March.
  • Phone-up your ward councillors to tell them not to vote for the cuts budget.
  • Come to the Notts SOS rally in Market Square against the City Council budget. Starts 12 noon on Saturday March 5th. All welcome. Bring banners, placards & things to make noise including yourself!
  • Come to the protest outside the budget meeting, Market Square at 1pm on Monday, 7th March. The meeting starts at 2pm. There will also be an a protest from 5-7pm for people to come to after work.
  • Go on the TUC March for the Alternative in London on Saturday, 26th March.

Imperialist Hands off Libya

02-03-2011 19:18

"The "lap dog presses" in western nations will not assist in revealing the horrific imperial grab now shaping up in North Africa. The western powers are on the "counter attack" as naval might is now poised to "intervene" in Libya to "save the day," read steal the victory, after the people themselves have deposed the dictator and begun to set up their own government. That is the west's' worst nightmare. Normal human beings, peacefully governing themselves? That would be a disaster and the most feared example from the "great white man's" perspective. And of course they want the oil and a potential launch pad for attacks (remember the contra war against revolutionary Nicaragua) on the new governments in Tunisia and Egypt should they deem to be too independent from the dictates of capital. Eh gads! They might decide to meet the needs of their citizens!

The people of Libya will need to state to the entire world that they will defend they're independence and sovereignty with the force of arms from all invaders. Only then will the imperialist consider backing off."
