Too Soon...? Call out for Party After Blair's Death!

10-04-2013 12:17

Thatcher may not even be in the ground yet but parties are already kicking off around the country to celebrate the passing of Britain's former PM! With big celebrations planned for this Saturday in Trafalgar Square I think it's also important to look to the future... And the passing of another much scorned Thatcherite politician... Tony Blair!

Bankrupt country can afford lavish funeral

10-04-2013 10:50

After the witch's long overdue death this week, William Hague has defended the public cost of the funeral, saying that Britain can "afford" to contribute. The tories insist we all tighten our belts and that there simply isn't money to provide vital services to maintain basic standards of living and keep people out of poverty. But they can afford to shell out millions to lavishly bury one of their own.

The Media In Overdrive: Thatcher And The Triumph Of Capitalism

10-04-2013 10:19

On Monday night, the day that Margaret Thatcher died, much of the mainstream media fell over itself to mourn the passing of a 'great' leader. There were of course some references to her being a ‘divisive figure', but only because she did what ‘had to be done', which politicians before her were too weak-willed to do (ie attack workers' rights, the welfare state and beat down wages). Even people like Henry Kissinger, a man often accused as having the blood of innocent millions on his hands, were wheeled onto our screens to tell the British public what a really outstanding leader she was. That the BBC would turn to Kissinger for such a ringing endorsement of Thatcher's policies and personality says a lot about the mindset over at the good old 'Beeb'.

Thatchers state funeral - Warning: scare tactics in use

10-04-2013 08:33

If things run to form, there will be lots of stories in the days to come about pre-emptive arrests, and heavy policing for Thatchers funeral. Intervention and deterrence - otherwise known as scaring people away from protest - is now an established police tactic. But it only works if we get scared.

09-04-2013 22:45

Really quite alot of people
All police leave has been cancelled in London for the day of Thatcher's funeral, next Wednesday. The cortege will leave Whitehall and travel via Trafalgar Square and The Strand, with the coffin being transferred to an army gun-carrier along the route, before being delivered by the Army to St Paul's. That's a long route...

Hopefully alot of miners and print-workers will be making a day of it

Death At The Ritz.

09-04-2013 22:21

In considering the legacy of Margaret Thatcher, it should not be forgotten that she was not acting alone. She was but the initial figurehead in the UK for the introduction of the neo-liberal policies favoured by by the most assertive section of the capitalist class, who are still in ascendency using other figureheads.

Barnardo's windows smashed in Brixton - it was us

09-04-2013 19:59

On the celebration of Thatcher's death, we smashed a window of Barnardo's 'charity shop' in Brixton using a concrete slab from a bin on the street. And it was easy. We would of done more if it weren't for self-proclaimed pacifists violently attempting to arrest us.

Nottm People gather to celebrate Thatcher's Death

09-04-2013 18:55

5pm on Monday 8 April 2013

The day dawned...... AT LAST, YAY!

Margaret Thatcher died before noon today [Monday].  People hearing this spendid news, gathered at the left lion in market square to mark this joyous occasion.

Margaret Thatcher died before noon today [Monday].  People hearing this spendid news, gathered at the left lion in market square to mark this joyous occasion. A couple of bottles of beer were consumed, party poppers let off. Folks were exhuberant and many smiles were evident!

Some of us had known this all afternoon. But I found it entertaining that many, who had just left their workplaces didn't know. When told however, faces light up and more smiles were added.

May she never ever RIP!

Personally I can never forgive her for the influences on my life, my family and people I have associated with. I have always wished her ill. Goodbye madam!

By the way .... does anyone know where the trade unions or the labour party were???? Just asking.

I would like to take this opportunity to big up a fellow photographers interpretation of the the Thatcher legacy.  Please check out David Hoffman, a slideshow  at: http://www.hoffmanphotos.com

Best Way to Celebrate Death of Thatcher

09-04-2013 18:55

We Didn't Pay Poll Tax, Don't Pay Council Tax!

The death of Margaret Thatcher brings back memories of the only significant defeat she suffered at the hands of the people: the Anti-Poll Tax Campaign.  Millions of people refusing to pay helped bring about her removal as Prime Minister.  In old Market Square on Monday leaflets were distributed urging people not to pay Council Tax as a protest against the cuts.  These were well-received by many people who had fond memories of defeating the Poll Tax.

After Thatcher we have her political heir, David Cameron, imposing severe austerity measures attacking ordinary people, especially poor ones.  The best way in which we can celebrate Thatcher's death is to develop a new campaign of mass refusal to pay up, not to pay Council Tax.  You don't have to go to London to do something but can start here in Nottingham by helping at the Don't Pay Council Tax stall in Hyson Green on Saturday
