First Court Hearing for The Cottage of Content's Occupiers

Press Release: First Court Hearing for The Cottage of Content's Occupiers
23 July, 2006

The Cottage of Content, a community and youth centre in Sparkbrook closed by Birmingham City Council last year, was occupied on 9 July, 2006, by a group of activists, who, along with local people, aim to put the building back into community use.

Since the start of the occupation, the collective who organised the take-over have been issued with various letters from Birmingham City Council demanding they vacate the premises. The latest letter received was a court summons, scheduled for Thursday, 24 August. Members of the Collective are planning to defend their actions and the occupation of the Cottage at the hearing, which is taking place at Birmingham Civil Justice Centre (33 Bull Street, Birmingham) at 11:20am.

The first public meeting of the Cottage Occupied Social Centre took place on 10th July, 2006, where the occupiers and members of the neighbourhood expressed their common desire for the place to be returned to public social use. A petition to "save our community centre from property developers" was drawn up and circulated in the neighbourhood. This was followed by a general public meeting on 21 August, where local residents expressed their anger at the loss of a valuable community resource without being consulted by the Council, and their desire to have it back. There will be another general meeting on 29 August, where representatives from the Council, local Councillors and the local MP will be invited to face the local people.

Whilst building up a campaign to compel the Council to re-instate this valuable community resource, the space is being used for a wide range of activities, from DIY and educational workshops, screenings and socials, a community library and Internet café, to a meeting place for various grassroots groups, including Birmingham Food Not Bombs, Birmingham NoBorders, Indymedia Birmingham, Women Fight Back, Birmingham Solidarity Federation and the West Midlands Anarchists. A local playgroup is also using the building to meet up regularly, and a local dominoes team is going to meet up there soon. Regular, open meetings are held every Monday at 7:30pm.

Baa Baa Baa: Tony's Liberal Sheep

23-08-2006 11:38

I am absolutely sick and tired of being treated like a mushroom... kept in the dark and fed shit by the politicians who are ruining this wonderful nation of England. It's not a conspiracy folks... it's a pattern. Simple maths taught me to recognise the patterns from learning the two times tables to advanced calculus. The bastards dumn down the education system, gag the media and then its a free for all where corruption is concerned. Who will question when the children are not taught to reason and read? Who can do the maths of how many billions of pounds these arseholes have stolen from the English public? How many children have been slaughtered at their hands, paid for and funded by our tax dollars? It's time to wake up folks and smell the coffee - CORRUPTION has a stank all of its own.

Crying Wolf: Terror Alerts based on Fabricated Intelligence

23-08-2006 10:54

While the foiled UK terror plot announced by Home Secretary John Reid has served to temporarily distract public attention from the ongoing atrocities committed in the Middle East war, it has also triggered a wave of public skepticism which could potentially lead to the downfall of Prime Minister Tony Blair. This skepticism is in part based on the pattern of repeated terror warnings over several years.

Baalbek, Capital of the Bekka Valley - Sun 20th Aug - Photo Report

23-08-2006 10:49

.
I’m in a coffee house in Baalbek to meet Mr Ahmad Rayya, who is a senior figure in Hizbollah and the spokesman for the local district. Baalbek has suffered badly from Israeli air strikes, and the evidence is all around us. Our journey here has taken us passed numerous bombsites where shopkeepers and homeowners toil in the dust and rubble to salvage items in preparation for clearance and rebuilding. The backdrop of Baalbeck’s ancient Roman ruins seems strangely in keeping with the destruction below. I start by asking him to summarise the cost of the war to the area.

The Destroyed Factory - Sat 19th Aug - Photo Report

23-08-2006 10:46

.
I am being shown around what is left of the Leban Lait Dairy plant by Deeb Mounzer, a mechanical engineer and one of the union reps. It was one of the biggest diary producers in the Middle East. On the 5th day of the war it was attacked by fighter jets in a strike whose precision was matched only by its ferocity. The factory is a twisted pile of metal drenched in millions of gallons of dairy that has been fermenting in the sun for weeks. The stench is unbearable and clouds of flies swarm around the wreckage. Deeb tells me that 270 people are now unemployed and no one is insured for war. The present estimate for getting even part of the factory operational is 1-2 years. The cows in the nearby supply farm are weak and neglected and no longer able to produce milk. Israel’s excuse for this outrage was that the factory was a possible weapons storage and funded Hizbollah. This allegation was repeated by all the corporate media in the west.

Dhayiya, Lebanon - Fri 18th Aug - Photo Report

23-08-2006 10:43

.
Never let it be said that Hizbollah are not media savvy. Quickly produced banners placed around the ruins of Dhayiya make their views of Israel’s sponsors very clear. ‘The New Middle Beast’ proclaims one, taking the piss out of George Bush’s recent statement. ‘Made in USA’ says another. ‘Extremely Accurate Targeting’ attacks Israel’s claims that their bombings were somehow precise; the banner in question being sat in the middle of a completely demolished street.
