Sweden: Action for free museums

03-02-2008 14:47

Actin
On Saturday February 2 "Open Stockholm" acted host as culturally starved "stockholmers" took part in an action for free entry to museums. Thirty or so culturebuffs visited the museum of architecture as well as the museum for Asian culture. To illustrate the failure of their attempt to introduce admission fees at museums - a symbolic mass entry was performed, without paying admission of course. Through this action we wanted to direct attention to the way admission fees and charges come to act as a fence in our cultural landscape.

Food Not (Bio)fuel protest Cambridge

03-02-2008 14:32

The action was held at Tesco's store in Milton, just north of Cambridge.
A dozen or so protesters braved the cold, the sun, and stroppy Tesco managers to draw attention to the increasing use of biofuels that wreck the environment and drive up food prices, most often in the developing world. The protest came at the end of a week of action called by biofuelwatch.org.uk.
Police were in attendance, but soon left, leaving Tesco staff so concerned about protester's safety that they repeatedly threatened to call the police when they stepped onto the forecourt. They finally got so fed up that just as we were about to leave they asked us to leave, in the process delaying our departure.

Rising fuel prices blight millions

02-02-2008 20:25

The recent hike in oil and gas prices has seen a sharp increase in what is termed fuel poverty in the UK. The consumer group Energywatch estimates that about 4.4 million are now affected by fuel poverty, amounting to one in six people in Britain.
