Response to Essex SWSS failure to denounce sexism

27-01-2013 17:28

This is a response to the Essex SWSS statement released on Januray 25th concerning recent allegations of rape within the SWP. A group of students from the University of Essex were wholly unsatisfied with the statement for its failure to engage with serious allegations of sexism.

Anonymous Nottingham: leafleting for 23rd Feb

27-01-2013 14:55

12.00pm Market square [and about] Sat 26th January 2013

Some folks from Anonymous Nottingham leafleted central Nottingham to advertise their concerns re govermnets, tax etc

Shortly after, a brace of Neighborhood wardens informed them that distibuting leaflets without permission could attract a £70.00 fine.

It is of course not true if the leaflets are for religious or political purposes. This was pointed out .... they seemed to know it anyway and went away.

2006 Nottingham Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 :: Some Correspondence

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/10/352444.html

Dear Mr Lodge

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the distribution of free printed matter.

The legislation came in to force on the 26th Sept and I am not certain where the date 16th Oct came from. What I did say was that we would spend the first couple of weeks making sure that distributors were aware of the need for a permit. After that time we will expect applications to have been made and if not then enforcement action could commence.

You are correct in your belief that there are exemtions and they are the ones you list in your e-mail. In terms of political purposes the Sec of State has suggested a wide interpretation be made and that the intention is not to inhibit thye right of freedom of expression and freedom of thought, conscience enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights.

I hope this is of help but please do not hesitate to contact me if any further information is required.

Regards

Leaflets also reminded folks of the 'Tax Avoidance Protest' due to be held from the Market Square 12pm on saturday 23rd February.

Folks then went on to gather around the statue of that other well known 'V' supporter .... Robin Hood. A political comment was then discovered  .... written in the snow :-)

They say:

On 26th January 2013 Anonymous will hold a national UK Paper storm. We ask that members of Anonymous manifest in their usual meeting areas in towns and cities.

So Nottingham show us you care.

The goal of the paper storm will be to raise public knowledge of Anonymous and of our upcoming events this year, by gathering across the country all on one day.

While public perception of Anonymous is slowly starting to increase, the governments and media will continue to portray us negatively, it is up to ourselves to ensure a good name for Anonymous and that the people know we fight for them. We intend to increase our public appearances in more areas now, so more people can see us and understand what we stand for.

This event will involve: handing out flyers, putting up posters, dropping flyers into cafes/libraries/bookstores/alternative stores, provide information to the public etc. Become an ambassador of Anonymous.

Things to consider: free hugs, music, flags and information regarding upcoming events and information regarding Anonymous.

Capita gets bigger slice of UK immigration cake, chokes on first bites

26-01-2013 17:42

Thousands of migrants received threatening text messages over the Christmas holiday telling them they did not have the right to be in the UK and should leave the country immediately. But many of them reportedly had valid visas, leaves to remain or even British passports. The texts were sent on behalf of the immigration authorities by the outsourcing giant Capita under a new £30 million contract to trace and contact 'overstayers'. Was this the first of to-be-expected cock-ups in this new 'bounty hunters' venture, or is it the shape of things to come as Capita and other private companies take over the immigration and asylum 'market'? Corporate Watch takes a look.

That Babbling Brook Of Bullshit

26-01-2013 10:55

We have 24 hour news coverage and are assaulted with an avalanche of bullshit and trivia. We have a long winded out pouring from a sick parasite from the parasitic family of Windsors informing us he killed Taliban, all in a matter of fact, all in a day's work attitude. Then we have massive coverage of celebrities sexual exploits, people making snowmen, while other tell us how dreadful it is when it snows and upsets their routine. However you will have to search hard to find anything about the people in Europe in struggle and direct action to protect themselves against this ongoing vicious attack by the financial Mafia. You get statistics about the soaring unemployment among the young and pie-in-the-sky plans to end hunger forever. But where is the coverage of struggles taking place on a daily basis?

The Imperialist Assault against Africa and its Origins

25-01-2013 22:10

It immediately crystallises awareness when in the age of panapocalyptic austerity and fictional accounting calculus someone is trying to strike a big deal with the fascist state. Not that the topic of prisoner release was not a fertile field for direct action, as any targeting of the cancer which is eating up imperialism from within, but an expectation based on the mutual balance of demands seems quite odd in regard to states which cannot even balance their own currencies, budgets and economies. Any concept of a rational state or remnant thereof from the past has long devolved into a mud hole of infantile dementia with no other agenda than sabotaging every political alternative to it. What is the point in asking a mud hole to release prisoners?

Clinging Onto Patriarchy

25-01-2013 14:07

Having a sectarian dig at the SWP’s recent problems - as some have done - is not the best way to deal with the serious issues involved. For this reason the article below is entitled ‘Clinging onto Patriarchy’ and considers how the whole of society - including the left - is dominated by patriarchal forms which result in various forms of marginalisation and exploitation of women - and not just in the SWP.
